Looking for private driver/guide

Starting to plan first trip. Hope to fly into Shannon, out of Dublin. First two days doing County Clare & Galway City. Next two days in Connemara. Next three days in Dublin City & environs. Have basic idea of sights wanting to visit. Need recommendations for base  for County Clare & Conn. ALso would prefer to hire driver/guide instead of doing our own driving or find a group tour. Chauffeur is a luxury but prefer the flexibilty & knowledge.

bensaunt,

Welcome to my forum. What time of year will you be in Ireland? There are day tours you can get from Limerick and Galway but in off-season they may not be operating. Give me more info so I can properly advise you.

For chauffeur-driven cars:

Try this company: http://www.accessirishlimos.com/

Hoping to go 1st couple weeks of May 2011 after bank holiday. There are just 2 of us.
Arrive Shannon. Hope to spend most of this day experiencing the Burren sights, the Cliffs, Quin Abbey in Ennis. The towns of Ennistymon, Doolin, Kinvara. The second day will see whatever we didn't get in 1st day, weather permitting of course, Cathedral in Loughrea, Galway City. Looking for base central to these areas for 2 nights - b&b or country manor house. Will not have car so close to town. Next two days spent in Connemara. Interested in both inland & coastal routes. So much to see & experience - bogland, lakes, mountains. Ashford, Kylemore Abbey, Celtic Crystal, Clifden, Westport. Need base for these two nights. Next day to Dublin via Athenry, Clonmacnoise. Next day Dublin environs while we still have driver/guide - Powerscourt & Glendalough. Last day Dublin city sights on our own. Need central base for these three nights. I don't know if this is too much but hope it won't be. Not interested in group touring. Prefer our own driver/guide so we can go at our own pace. Interested in Irish countryside, scenic drives & villages, architecture, Celtic sites.

Without a car I would be tempted to stay in Ennis or Galway which both serve the west coast and Cliffs by bus. There are also regular tours of the Burren/Cliffs and Connamara/Kylemore running from Galway. The problem is that without a car you will be hard pressed to see all you list by public transport. So it would be better to either hire a car or find a driver if posible for the Clare/Connamara days. I would fit Loughrea on the trip from Galway to Athlone as both City Link and Bus Eireann stop in town. Clonmacnoise is off the transport map but there are regular trips from Athlone with Paddy Kavanagh in Athlone but you would have to email him for times. (pkmail@eircom.net <pkmail@eircom.net>)

My thanks to Tony for the additional recommendations. FYI, the first one on my list is the one my clients use. They have had nothing but praise for the company and driver/guides.

After looking at AccessIrishLimos website, from what I can discern is that they hire out chauffered vehicles. In order to get the "guide" part it looks like they refer you to a third party company like CIE or Irishtourism or am I totally wrong?

bensaunt,

My clients who used Access Irish Limos had driver/guides provided by the company. I could see nothing on their website about "third parties" but perhaps you can point me to the page you were looking at? It is possible that they have changed things recently. Probably the best way to find out exactly what you want to know is send them a quick email and ask.
