Car hire by the day

Greetings!  I have read hundreds of posts about car rental in Ireland and I did it successfully 4 years ago, armed with info from this site.  I rented a car for 12 days last time, and drove everywhere.  This time, I would rather pick and choose the days I want to have a car.  Is this possible?  Or will it just be a hassle?  Perhaps I could contact Dooley and arrange something like this ahead of time, with the days being somewhat flexible. 

Since I will be in Dublin for much of this visit, I will not need a car every day.

I have no problems getting one or two day hire from Budget (or Europecar (only for Van hire)) and they have offices all over so if you bus or train between points and hire local for the day it could suit your needs.

Marie,

You can certainly rent a car for a few days. But many times a weekly rental costs less. Look into both possibilities and then decide.
