Hi to all,we are going to Ireland for the first time in May.Family whom I have never met is going to meet us,I only discovered I had family in Aug while doing geanealogy research.A lot of 1st cousins etc.She is going to take me to Maylough,Galway where my mother was born, the house still stands.(1910)Is it best to use B&B,I know the family will want to put us up,not wanting to offend anyone but dont know their financial situation.I figure something like this ,first 2 days Dublin where she lives and recover from flight, then three days in Maylough,Father was from Sligo but have no one there.Would like to see Galway and some things in Dublin. Some fill in for the middle days are open but could use some ideas on sightseeing.Dont know if I need a car but am willing to rent. Any suggestions appreciated. Pat
Welcome to my forum. How exciting to contact your family and be planning a trip to meet them. From what you have told me one of your cousins lives in Dublin. You will visit her for a few days and then you will both go to Moylough, Co. Galway.
If you don't want to stay with family I suggest you stay at a hotel in Dublin. I always enjoy staying at B&Bs outside of the larger cities and they can be cost-effective. But do look into specials that the hotels offer too. Some are too good to pass up on.
If you rent a car (on departure from Dublin) you will be more footloose and fancy free. Using public transportation restricts you to their routes and schedules.
Since you are at the beginning stages of your trip you have time to explore different possibilities. Do you know how long your entire trip will be? What type of sightseeing are you interested in?
I dont know about spending 3days in Moylough it is a small town halfway between Roscommon and Galway on the N63. Perhaps you could do a loop which would include Sligo and whilst this could be done by public transport you would probably find it better to rent a car outside of Dublin.

The length of my trip will be 10 days.starting at Dublin and going from there. My cousin insists that I stay with her,she has a 4 BR home with only her and her husband.I am ok with that I am more concerned with when we go to Maylough. The reason I said 3 days there is that is where all of the family is located.I dont know the amount but apparently there is family there from not only my mothers father side of the family but from the McLoughlin side of the family which would be my GrGR Grandfather.I have never met any of them, and only recently(Aug)discovered their name. How does approx 3 days there sound go to Galway city rent a car go to Sligo, If I choose to go ,maybe a side trip to the Arigna mines where my father and most of his brothers worked, most of whom contracted TB later in life after emigrating to the US.maybe then driving back to Dublin and returning the car there.BB's would be ok on that part of the trip Thank you for the input will continue to look for advice Pat PS. Can someone tell me how tp make the font larger on this page I think a lot of people will have problems reading it.All other messages are fine except this one
If you have a lot of family in Moylough then I can understand visiting with them for three days (or more). You will want to get acquainted, see the family homestead and have time to delve into the family roots.
On your way from Dublin to Moylough some sightseeing I would recommend is Belvedere House & Gardens and Clonmacnoise Monastic Site. Once in the west you have a lot more sightseeing open to you including Galway, Connemara, Sligo area, Westport.
As part of a 10 day trip taking three with your new found family is reasonable, my train of thought was how to fill the spare time over those days. Sometimes I forget that others don't see through the local eyes and the country around there is really quite scenic. The Castle and Grotto are worth a look, there are a couple of Ring forts and other ruins in the area.
Budget car hire have offices in both Galway and Roscommon so you should be ok on that score. Arigna Mines are off the tourist radar but well regarded by the many visitors they do get. You can even take the kids to see santa down there before Christmas.

You may have to inquire as to lodgings from those relations in Moylough. I have spent time there, myself, and don't recall much at all in the way of accommodations. It is an incredibly small village. I have pictures of some of the ruins in the area and the cemetery which I shot last year.
You might be better off to find your lodgings in Tuam and drive back and forth, as Tuam would be the closest larger town.
