CAR RENTAL SHANNON AIRPORT CONFUSED ON THIS CDW INSURANCE. PER MY MASTERCARD THEY COVER FOR CAR RENTAL INSURANCE IF YOU USE THE CARD. NO PROBLEM EXCEPT THAT IN IRELAND IT IS AT THE DESCRETION OF THE "COUNTER" ACCORDING TO HERTZ. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ISSUE. ALSO I RESERVED A CAR FOR 11 DAYS INCLUDING THE INSURANCE FOR 455.00 (ITS A COMPACT CAR UNLIMITED MILES) IS THIS A GOOD PRICE???

car rental i don't have a lot of experience with this - but we got a Ford Flocus for $244 for 9 days with unlimited miles. This was from Dan Dooley's (they have an office in New Jersey for US residents) The insurance was waved because we used a platinum MC or VISA.

Re: car rental The price depends on many factors: Manual or Automatic CDW included? Car Size # of days Where you are picking up / dropping off Time of year you are travelling.
It is cheaper to get a Manual , than an Automatic, but for many, the Automatic price is worth not trying to shift with your left hand.
The time of year (high season vs low season) and what airport you are using ( pick up / drop off same airport or different ones) can also make a difference .
We had a Focus wagon / Automatic / no CDW for 13 days in April , which was 990Euros.
Check out 3 or 4 or more different car rental places to get the best deal.
I have used Dan Dooley twice and never had a problem with them.

car rental we do have an automatic...April i guess is high season - can't imagine there is that much of a difference - but you had a wagon too. And we have a Ford Focus not Flocus - lol.

Re: car rental A station wagon is always more money ( bummer) That was a big part of why our bill was so high - But what can you do with 4 adults , 4 25" suitcases & 4 carryons ? for a 15 day trip? You should have seen the prices for a mini van !
I know my 8 day rental from 2000 was around 350 not including CDW. (Ford Mondero Automatic)

car rental Thanks for the info on Dan Dooley. I called today for April 2004 and was able to reserve at the 2003 rate. It was better than both Budget and Hertz. Thanks again for the info.
Most of the top car rental companies will let you decline the CDW when you charge it on your gold or platinum MasterCard. Always ask in advance and try to get everything in writing.
As always, shopping around and taking your best rate is the best policy.

Shannon Car Rental & Credit Cards We are traveling to Ireland for 6 days over the holidays. I am finding that some car rental companies will put an additional "hold" on your credit card. Some say 700 Euro! Is this normal? Can you recommend a company that would not do that?
Re: Shannon Car Rental & Credit Cards Hi jamaicawed,
Some car rental companies will put a "hold" on your card to protect themselves for the insurance deductible in case you have an accident. I would suggest going to my car rental page and calling each company to see what their policy is. If you have a card with a high credit limit or a couple of cards you will use in Ireland then there is really no problem with their doing that. The last few times I have used Budget and Hertz with good results. However, as always, I suggest visiting all the car rental sites and getting a price for the same car (and extras like insurance, etc.). When you have comparison shopped, take the one with the best rates.
