I was hoping you or some of your readers could comment on any experience traveling on Delta to Ireland. I haven't flown Delta since I was a kid! Last year, I used BA and changed planes in London. Going with an American carrier this year would get me there first thing in the morning rather than lunchtime. As you know, the more hours in Ireland, the better!
Also, do you think landing in Shannon and immediately getting a car and driving to Dingle is a bad idea? How long will it take?
Thanks!!

Re: Delta Service to Ireland? Hi Andrea:
I flew Delta to Ireland last year and it was fine. If you fly back out of Shannon, you will fly to Dublin, get off the plane while they clean it and then you fly out two hours later. It's an early departure from Shannon. Continental is the only one that I know that has separate flights from Shannon and Dublin. The fly out of Newark.
For most drivers, Shannon to Dingle is about four hours which is a long first day of driving by my standards. I like to keep it to two hours with a bunch of breaks in between.
I flew Delta from Shannon to Atlanta in May and the flight and service were very good. I happened to get business class (lucky me). There was one glitch. On the day I was departing someone drove a baggage belt into the plane and put a hole in it. The flight was canceled and everyone was put up in a hotel for the night. The plane was repaired and we left the next day. That could have happened to any airline. I would recommend Delta.
To clarify what Bill said, Delta has different schedules on different days. On one day they will go Atlanta/Shannon/Dublin on the next they go Atlanta/Dublin/Shannon. On the way back it goes Dublin/Shannon/Atlanta or Shannon/Dublin/Atlanta. They alternate days doing this.
I wouldn't personally drive from Shannon to Dingle on my first day in the country. Better to stop along the way. Perhaps Killarney?

Delta Just to add another recommendation... We've flown to Ireland 3 times on Delta out of Atlanta and have another flight booked for May. We've had very good service each trip. One time we had a late departure out of Atlanta but only by about 45 minutes and the pilot made up the time in the air. We begin in Birmingham Alabama with a Delta flight to Atlanta. It's so simple to check our bags in B'ham and be done with them. Then we only have to make our way to the departure gate in Atlanta. On our first trip in Oct 2001 we also got a free upgrade to business on the flight home. I think the post 9/11 drop in travel made it possible. Martha

Delta, etc Thanks everybody. Now I feel good about choosing Delta if they end up having a good fare.
With regard to the long drive between Shannon and Dingle, what about maybe overnighting in Tralee (at Ballyseede Castle if it's still open, I know it was up for sale)? I know that's still not a quick drive, but maybe more reasonable and then we're pretty close to Dingle for the next day.

BALLYSEEDE CASTLE I HAVE RESERVATIONS FOR APRIL 23RD AT THE CASTLE. HOW LONG AGO WAS IT FOR SALE? IT IS NOW OWNED BY THE O'CONNOR FAMILY. I RECENTLY REC. EMAIL CONFIRMATION.
Ballyseede Castle Andrea, Traveling to Tralee is doable. Drive time is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. That is probably the max you want to drive after your arrival.
MBarnes, I haven't stayed or visited Ballyseede. I don't know if it has sold yet. I suppose you could email them to ask. However, it is possible for a historic place like that to be on the market for a long time before the proper buyer can be found. If anyone books through 1 2 Travel be sure to mention you were recommended by IrelandYes.com. I get a few pennies from each sale there but you will pay no more for mentioning me. Also some extra special care for my readers.

. i did want to add our experience. We have mainly flown southwest and charter flights so we did not know what to expect from Delta. We flew from St. Louis to Newark in the SMALLEST plane i've ever been in. It could not have been 7 feet across and a man over 6 foot could not have stood straight up in the isle. The were three seats in each roww - one on one side and two on the other. I was a little nerveous but the seats were leather and the crew was very nice. Now, we flew in and out of Shannon but i will tell you Delta was very nice and the food kept coming but the strange thing was the movies were from the 70s - which i thought was funny. Someone else took a different airline and they said they watched The new Jim Carrey movie and some other new release. I guess that's why we paid less for our tickets, lol. Have fun, it's a long flight but we were there before we knew it!
