Location Recommendation to Rent A Home While Visiting Ireland

Looking to stay in Ireland for a Month - June, July, or August.  Prefer to rent a house for up to 6 guests where we can live and travel from to visit the rest of Ireland.  Would like a quaint town, preferably near or on the coast that we can get acquainted with and enjoy the local daily faire.  We are unfamiliar with Ireland and would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks - Dave

I would be tempted to pick 2 centres for your stay rather than a single location. If you fly into Dublin spend a few days there before heading to your 1st location after your 2nd location you could fly out from Shannon. Checking the guide books and forums will give you ideas for places to see and thereby possible locations to stay. I would not influence your initial decisions but I would advise against staying out on peninsular locations but rather close to main transport links and routes.

Dave,

Welcome to my forum. Like Tony I would choose a few different places since you have a whole month in Ireland. No one place will be efficient for seeing all of Ireland. But if you choose a few places carefully you can see a good portion of the island.

I have some suggested self-catering cottages on my Self-catering Page. Take a look to see if any appeal. I have a much more lengthy listing in my book.

The months during which you are traveling to Ireland are popular ones for renting a cottage. You should make your choices soon after the first of the year to get your rentals of choice.

Some places that I would consider that fit your current description:

Kenmare

Kinsale

Adare

Ballyvaughan

Oughterard

Clifden

Roundstone

Birr

Glasson

Killaloe

Perhaps if you give us more info about your interests, we can better help you target your areas.

I appreciate your input, since I am just beginning my research.

Our planned visit to Ireland is for the summer of 2012.  It is a present for a college graduate who requested an extended vacation in Ireland.  Plans were to find home or cottage for a month and have other relatives / friends visit with us for shorter periods throughout the stay.

I wanted to get a very early jump on securing a desirable place (or two) for the trip.  Once I know where and when we are staying, I'll be extending invitations to a few favorite relatives & friends.

Personally, I prefer to savor time in some choice areas rather than trying to rush to see everything Ireland has to offer.  I am sure there are many wonderful sites.

Thanks
