Ceili vs. Banquet at Bunratty

Hi Michele,

You mentioned in your suggestions of my itinerary that the Ceili at Bunratty was enjoyable. Would you choose that over the banquet? Or Kathleen's Irish Nights at the hotel nearby?
I didn't really like the banquet at Knoppogue Castle. IT was pretty bad and I could barely move my arms when I ate. I wanted something enjoyable on our last night but I'm not sure where to make reservations.

We love Irish music when it's played by competent musicians, so anything with good music and entertainment would work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Irene

Re: Ceili vs. Banquet at Bunratty

Hi Irene,

They do pack the tourists in at the banquets! That's because most of the tour buses attend the banquets. Also, sitting on those long benches can be a claustrophobic experience. At the Ceili you sit in chairs at long farmhouse tables. The seating can be a little tight but since you have your own chair as opposed to a bench where they can make you slide closer you do have more room. You can also tell the person seating you that you need more room and ask to sit at the end of the table. Or if there are vacant tables available state your preferences.

The music and dance at the Ceili is very good and I think that the food is better than the banquet. You have a choice of salmon, Irish stew or vegetarian pasta. I always recommend the salmon if you like seafood. The Irish stew was pretty good but I haven't tried the pasta.

Try the Ceili. I think you will like it. And let us know your opinion when you return.

Ceili vs. Banquet at Bunratty

Thanks for the advice Michele. I was leaning toward the Ceili and you pushed me over.

Do you know the pronunciation of Ceili. I'm fluent in 3 languages but Irish isn't one of them---and never will be...it's tougher than English or Spanish.

Hi Irene,

The pronunciation of Irish is very difficult because nothing is pronounced the way it looks in writing. Ceili is pronounced kay-lee. Enjoy!

pronouncing

If I may butt in :D , Glendalough is Glen-dollock. And should it arise, Dunshaughlin is Dun-shocklin; I embarassed myself with that one. If I remember correctly, Laoise is Lee-shuh.
Have fun!

Pronunciation

Hi Marcia,

Dude is correct it is Glen-da-lock. I think we should start a new thread just about pronunciation of Irish places and words.

maybe a link

Maybe a link on the main website to a place where we can ask and tell about pronounciation, and our successes and failures!

Pronounciations

I think that would be a great idea. Well I just have to ask ... how do you pronounce Cead Mile Failte?

Cead mile failte

Kay-ed Mee-lah Fal-cheh, but not so definite, if you know what I'm saying. Kinda slur the syllables together. Sorta like we do in Texas!
