How's this itinerary sound?

We are going to Ireland in May. We have eight nights before we cruise on a canal boat. I am thinking that we would spend the first two nights in Killarney then move on to one night around Doolin, two nights in Galway, one night somewhere farther north towards Sligo (any suggestions?) and then two nights in Dublin before we go on the canal boat which we catch near Kildare. We cruise for a week and then will spend our last night in Dublin. We fly into Shannon but out of Dublin. Does this sound like a good plan? Is Kilarney a good point to sightsee out of? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Haystin,

I would cut out the night in Sligo as it is an awfully long way to go for a one-night stay. Add it on to Killarney. Since your first night is in Killarney jet-lag may prevent you from doing some of the things you want on your first day. There is so much to see and do there that you will be glad of the extra day. It is also a bit shorter drive from Galway to Dublin than from Sligo to Dublin. Otherwise, it looks good.

I wondered if it would be too far afield to go to Sligo. Thanks for the recommendation. Also one more question--can the Connamara area, say from Galway to Westport and back, be easily done in a day?

Hi Haystin,

You can do Connemara as a day trip from Galway but it will take an entire day. Westport (in Co. Mayo and not officially in Connemara) might be a stretch. Though if the weather is good and daylight is long you might accomplish Westport too but that will be a long day indeed.

So doing the circle route you suggestion in your book for Connamara from Galway would be good. Now, how about instead of three nights in Killarney, doing two nights there and one in Dingle. Dingle sounds like fun!

Hi Haystin,

The circle route in my book would certainly work for you in seeing Cong and Connemara as a day trip from Galway. But get an early start on that day, because it is a long day trip.

Dingle is fun and very beautiful. You could put a day there.
