Ireland Adventure

Hello Everyone,

I am planning my first trip to Ireland and wanted to see if anyone could give any suggestions/advice.

I will be flying into Shannon Airport on a Thursday in early September.
Day One: Cliffs of Moher/explore town of Dingle, night in Dingle

Day Two:
Drive the Slea Head, try to do a tour of Gap of Dunloe. Stay the night in Killarney

Day Three:
Blarney Stone, Cobh and stay in somewhere between Cork and Dublin, any suggestions?

Day Four:
Drive to Dublin hitting Wicklow on the way and spending the rest of the time in Dublin.

Please let me know what you think. I am worried I am missing something or doing something that may take up a lot of time and not neccessarily worth it.

Thanks!
Dan

Dan,

Welcome to my forum. Since you only have 4 days in Ireland you will spend a lot of your time in the car driving from place to place. It is not something that most of us here would recommend. But if that is your travel style it will give you a whirlwind look at a portion of Ireland.

Keeping in mind that you will average 35 mph you should consider taking the Shannon ferry when you head south to Dingle. The Gap of Dunloe tours usually start early in the morning. Since you are planning on doing Slea Head you probably should drop that from your itinerary. I also suggest you drop Wicklow from your plans. Otherwise you will have no time in Dublin except at night on Day 4. Are you departing on Day 5? Or will you have more time for Dublin?

Sorry, I was vague. We will get to Dublin on night 4 and stay there another day and night and fly out on day 6. Are there any pubs you would recommend in Dublin?

Thanks for all your help.

Rachel & Dan,

The Brazen Head and Gogarty's are both good and have trad music. If you drop into the tourist office they will give you other listings or you could go on an organized pub crawl of Dublin.

For Day 3 you could consider staying in Cashel or Kilkenny.

Hey Dan, As a Dubliner born and bred I can definitely concur with the Brazen Head as one of the great pubs of Dublin (it's also Dublin oldest pub). Right across the road from is another great pub - 'The Merchant' which has music most nights, but here you will also find Irish set dancing - not a performance for the tourists, but regular people who dance there several nights a week.

And if you're up that end of Dublin check out the Chester Beatty Library (www.cbl.ie) said to be one of the best libraries in Europe. They also have a great wholefood restaurant.

Enjoy you're stay - nothing is a waste of time in Ireland ... you'll meet great people wherever you go and sure isn't that what makes a great holiday!

regards,

Sue

A Chara, that is the wish of most everyone who travels over...no matter how long or short our stay... People laugh because I tell them that I am making a "short" trip over in june...two weeks....

Bit,

If only I can figure out a way to spend the whole summer in Ireland! I suppose I could if I only do Budget Itineraries all year.
