Kerry or Cork for a family vacation

Hello Michele and all,

I'm seeking opinions. We have an opportunity to stay in a cottage either in County Kerry, in Ballinskelligs, near the ring of Kerry, or in Ardgroom in County Cork, on the Beara penninsula. I'd like opinions from those who have been to either. What are the pros and cons of the areas.

I have heard that County Kerry is prettier than County Cork, but there is one phrase that keeps coming up in my research and strikes fear into my heart "Tour Busses"!!!

We are a family that prefers to see the real country. Local pubs and less crowded places of interest. I'm not interested in breathing the exhaust fumes of buses everywhere I go, nor fighting maddening crowds of my fellow Americans (and I do agree that some of us make ugly tourists)

But at the same time I don't want to be so remote that daytrips to interesting areas are out of the question.

So I'd love to hear others' experiences before we make our choice. Is one place better for ease of getting around? For beaches? Medieval history? Fishing excursions? Local flavor? Nature photography for my husband? Contemporary art galleries for me? Fun stuff for the kids?

Thanks all for your responses!

Wendy

Wendy,

That's a tough decision. Neither place is really well-suited for doing day trips since both are way out on peninsulas and it will take time to drive off the peninsula and then back again. I suppose Ardgroom would be a shorter drive to get off the peninsula.

What time of year are you going? That will determine the crowds and bus tours. There is more traffic on the Ring of Kerry although Ballinskelligs is off the beaten path on the Skellig Ring. There won't be any tour buses roaring past either place you mentioned. The Beara Peninsula generally has a lot less traffic and tourists.

More and better beaches on the ROK. You can go fishing from either. You will find little craft shops, etc. in both places. Art galleries tend to be in more populated areas, though there is one in Ardrigole on Beara.

Both places you want to stay are remote with less choice of restaurants, pubs, sightseeing day trips, etc. than if you choose to stay closer to "touristy" areas. But if it is a remote "far from the madding crowd" experience you are looking for either place would suit.
