Has anyone been to Limerick?

I'm noticing a distinct lack of people including Limerick on their itinerary, and no reports back on people that have been there.

Is there any particular reason?

Clodagh Ni,
My husband and I will be spending the last day of our 2 1/2 week stay this May in Limerick. We're turning in our rental car at the airport, taking the bus into Limerick for the day (Friday, May 21) and returning to Bunratty for overnight. We fly home Saturday morning. I think a lot of people have the drab "Angela's Ashes" image of Limerick. Plus we read about lots of crime. But I know that neither is representative of the city as a whole. I would appreciate any ideas on how best to enjoy the city.

If it is an indicator of what my wife and I experienced, Limerick is okay with me. Although we didn't stop, we were passing thru on the way to Bunratty. After realizing we were lost, I slowly drove along side 2 fellas crossing the street. I said we are lost, but I know we need to cross over a bridge to get on the other side of the river to get to Bunratty. It was getting dusk, the guy knows what we have to do, tries to explain directions. After a few seconds he rubs his chin and says, tell you what, I'll hop in my car and follow me. He led us thru some downtown traffic and finally waved us to go straight as we aprroached the bridge. We continued with our travel to the Bunratty Lodge that evening. I'll always remember the kindness they had offered us that evening. Now I'm sorry I did not spend more time in Limerick.

I'm really glad to hear that . Limerick is no more violent than Dublin, Cork or Galway. We just have a different type of crime. Tourists are NOT in any more danger in Limerick than they are anywhere else. Limericks troubles are between 2 feuding families, and it has been kept out of the city and withing the estate they live on.

The Hunt Museum was just voted Irelands Best Museum so that's worth a visit.

King John Castle and The Kings Island are wonderful.

There is an Angelas Ashes tour which is supposed to be very interesting, I've heard great things about it. But it does take amost 4 hours and there's lots and lots of walking involved.

St Marys Cathedral is a great way to spend a few hours.

You'll have no trouble finding thing to do for your last day.


BUT, you did mention that you will be coming to Limerick on a Friday. BE WARNED OF THE TRAFFIC! Fridays are like a mass exodus, and in the evenings you have the traffic going from the city out towards Shannon and Galway. The morning coming in should be ok, but if you are going to be keeping a dinner reservation for Friday night in Bunratty allow yourself plenty of time to get from the city to your hotel.

Clodagh, what is the story behind these feuding families? It sounds like it might be an interesting tale.

Hi Everyone,

I don't think that Limerick has the glitz of Dublin or the buzz of Galway or the elegance of Kilkenny but in my opinion it beats Cork hands down. (Now I'm going to hear it from all those Corkonians out there!) There is plenty to see and do (as Clodagh listed) and good shopping. Unfortunately it has gotten a bad reputation in the press who call it Stab City. You could liken it to people avoiding Northern Ireland because all they ever hear about it is bad news. But have you ever noticed there is very little good news on the news?

I recommend Limerick to many of my clients. However, I think that most people are ending up their trips when they reach this area. With limited time they usually just concentrate on the usual things like Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, a medieval banquet or Ceili.

When it comes to limited time on vacation most tourists want to hit the high spots and just skim over the others. They have to pick and choose carefully what they want to see and do within their time constraints.
