Car rental

My husband & I are going to spend two weeks in Ireland in September. I'm wondering which car rental service Dooley or Auto Europe, is best to go with for a self drive tour of Ireland ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dooley's or Budget might be a better question. I would avoid Auto Europe. Whoever you consider just make sure that the quote is ALL inclusive and have hard copy to take to the desk.

At the top of the forums, there is a very extensive treatise on the subject delved into at length by both Bob and Michele... it's worth the read.

After a rather nasty experience with AutoEurope/Kemwel in May of 2009, I would definitely have to say Dan Dooley would be a better bet. Dooley seems to truly put all the costs up front. AutoEurope/Kemwel claim to do teh same. I can say, from experience, that is not the case

Suzy,

I've rented from a great number of different car rental companies over the years. With every one of them (except Dooley) you will be surprised by extra costs and a higher total than you expect. I've rented from Dan Dooley the past few times and the only "extra" was petrol (tank of gas), which was refunded when the car was returned full. When shopping around Dooley seems higher than the others. If you factor in the extras, they may not be much higher. For a 10% discount with Dooley use code: dochara.

I've gotten some decent quotes from www.myguideireland.com. Have you had any experience with them, Michele? Or anyone else? I will most likely use Dan Dooley on my next trip, regardless, but they seem very helpful.

Christy,

I've not used them. If you book directly with Dooley you can get a 10% discount. Code: dochara.

Hello Michele,

I'm new to your forum but not to your book. I purchased a copy 10 years ago prior to my first trip to Ireland in September of 2001. It was a very helpful tool and I stayed at all of the B & B's that you recommended that were in the places I was traveling to. A beautiful and memorable trip made even more so because I was flying home on 9-11 and had to return to London. My biggest regret is that I didn't get to spend the extra 4 days in Ireland!

I am returning to Ireland in April for a 10 day trip. I was making my arrangements when I came across your forum. I read all the posts on the car rentals and wondered if I was even going to be able to afford the trip. I came across Dan Murphy's post about Journey Through Ireland / Hertz and gave it a shot.

What a pleasant surpise!! I went to their website to request a quote and then called the 800#. Conn (Himself ;) answered the phone and very patiently went over all the info, made recommendations and gave me a grand quote! They had a special discounted rate if I paid in full for my rental in April (which I was prepared to do anyway). I would suggest to anyone looking for a rental car in Ireland to include Journey Through Ireland / Hertz in their short list of providers.

I could not be more pleased! Thanks for all YOUR terrific info as well.

April Bahan

April,

How nice that you are returning to Ireland again. I was there on 9-11 also. It was so strange flying home after that. What changes!

Thanks for your input on the car rentals. I hope that works well for you. You must report back to us as to how it goes on your return.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele
