Trip Insurance and Self Catering

We are starting to plan our June trip (4 of us). We have been to Ireland, but have never bothered with trip insurance before. This time I'm considering purchasing the trip insurance.
For those of you who have used trip insurance, did you purchase through the airlines or a private carrier? Any advise?

Also, we have always stayed in hotels or with relatives in the past, however this time we want to do self catering, one week in Kerry and one week in Galway. For those who have rented a weekly cottage close to Killarney or close to Galway City, do you have any recommendations?

Thanks,
Judy M.

I have purchased it twice, using www.insuremytrip.com to compare policies and choose the options I wished. I've not had to file a claim, but I've heard good things about the service, depending on which carrier you choose.

I rented a lovely farmhouse about a half hour's drive from Killarney, but I don't believe it's rented out anymore :( It was in Rathmore, right on the border of County Kerry and Cork, in the Paps.

Judy,

As Christy (GD) says www.insuremytrip.com is a good place to comparison shop. I've not self-catered in Killarney but have in Kenmare. If you want some personal Kenmare recommendations let me know. Also look at my self-catering page for tips on renting.

In my research I have found a lot less self-catering to choose from in Co. Galway than in other areas.

I've had my eye on this self-catering in Killarney but have not stayed there or visited it: http://www.irishholidayrentals.com/property.html?id=229

Thanks Christy and Michele. Now I have a place to start with my trip insurance planning.

We do want to stay close to Killarney and I will look into my options for cottage rentals in that area.

For Killarney. Purpose built development in the grounds of the Killarney Oaks.

Having lived an hour out from Galway for the past 3 years I dont do self cattering locally but we used to use Tuar Beag which has 2 self catering flats along with the B&B in Spidal about 7 miles west of town.  For Clifden we use either the Coast Guard Station or if possible when theres somthing on there like arts week the townhouse behind the town centre.  Clifden is great for a week on the Connamara but Spidal gives access to Galway, Clare and the Burren as well.

Judy,

Tony has given you some options. I've looked in my files and found Park Place apartments right in Killaraney town. They get good reviews but I've not inspected them.

Michele, Park Place Apartments in Killarney is such a great location on High Street; however we need 3 bedrooms and they only offer 1 or 2 bedroom apartments.

Tony's suggestion of the Holiday Cottages would be a good location, just over one mile from the town centre and large enough for our needs. The Holiday Cottages web site states that they are situated on the grounds of the Killarney Oaks Inn. I'm not familar with that location. Do you know what direction from Killarney town centre that would be? Is it in the direction of Muckross House or out near Beaufort?

I know we will also check out the numerous locations in Galway, offered by Shamrock Cottages, that Tony has suggested.
Thanks Michele and Tony, you have helped to narrow down my search.

Judy,

Killarney Oaks Inn is on Muckross Road. Heading toward Muckross House, it is about a mile from town on the left.
