First (long awaited) trip -- Looking for self-catering advice

My husband and I have wanted to go to Ireland for -- well, forever. We promised ourselves long ago that we would go for our 20th anniversary, but we couldn't swing it at that point. Over two years later, we are finally making our plans. We have our plane tickets, so that part is not flexible (in and out of Dublin, March 1 and March 15).

We'll be traveling with our two boys (17 and 14). My mom (77!) will be with us for the first week. She's been to Ireland maybe 4 or 5 times, most recently when my younger brother was married there. (Yes, of 6 kids, I'm the only one who hasn't been able to make the trip yet!)

Mom is flying out of Shannon after one week. She says she doesn't care where we go, (except that she'd rather not stay in Dublin). We're thinking two or more locations for self-catering (if we can get partial week rentals -- It seems like some places are willing that early in the year?)

I was thinking maybe Killaloe, but am really looking for suggestions.

Any help appreciated!

Peace,
Maura

Maura,

Welcome to my forum. Sounds like a great multi-generation trip you are planning. If I was landing in Dublin I would spend my time in Kilkenny and Kenmare. That will give you a taste of a small city and a small village. There is plenty to do and see from both spots. I think Killaloe might be too isolated in March. Go to my Self-catering Page for more info.
