Drawsy,

Welcome to my forum. On the whole your itinerary looks fine. I like that you have multiple night stays at each stop.

Something to consider: What you have proposed for your first three days (Doolin) is doable. However, the ferries from Doolin to Aran Islands can be canceled because of weather or the seas. The islands are also a destination I would want to do in good weather. Galway might make a better base. If the weather is not cooperative you can always do Connemara or Galway City instead. The ferries that go from the Galway area are not canceled as frequently as those in Doolin. Doolin is a very small place and three nights might be too much. Much more to do and see in Galway. But if you are looking for a small village, perhaps that is why you have chosen Doolin. Aran View is not right in Doolin village but on the outskirts. You will probably want to drive in each evening for dinner and pubs.

Take a look at my LODGINGS PAGE for more recommended accommodations. In Kinsale if you want to be right in town I like Desmond House. On the edge of town (walking distance) Woodlands House is excellent. A couple of miles from town is the lovely Rivermount House.

For Kilkenny I like Rosquil and Laragh House. Both are a long walk to the city.

Good for you in not trying to do EVERYTHING at once on your first trip! No Green Blur tour, as Michele says...

I would second the 2 nights in Doolin and would put a night into Ennis. The Fleadh Nua Festival is on the end of May and the craic is mighty.  In fact personally I would skip Doolin and stay all 3 in Ennis, getting to the places you listed is easy from Town in the daytime and you have the benifit of the festival for your evenings entertainment.

Drawsy,
You are going to Ireland at a great time of year. Your itinerary looks good but I would agree with Michele and Tony about 3 days being too long in Doolin. We have found  Butler Court to be a very good place to stay in Kilkenny - very central to downtown but private and quiet. Have a great trip.

Well I guess it is unanimous about 3 nights in Doolin being too much. I think we will make Ennis our first stop especially with the Festival going on.

Desmond Hse sounds like our Kinsale destination.

Thanks for your feedback. Looking forward to the trip.

Drawsy,

I'm just going to put in my two-cents worth here... Looks like a great trip you've planned. I would just mention two things:

1) Be aware that the first weekend in June (just before you depart) is a holiday weekend in Ireland. If you don't have all of your reservations confirmed for that weekend, you should probably think about doing it fairly soon.

2) If you want to stay anywhere even close to Ennis during the fleadh, get a reservation ASAP. That is a hugely popular festival (and a fantastic one at that!), and accommodation will book quickly and early.

Other than that, you're visiting some of my personal faves, including Kilkenny, which is one of the best towns to walk in all of Ireland (in my opinion). wink

Look forward to hearing how your trip went. Go dté tú slán! (If I've got that right, it means "Safe travel!")

Thanks Kate and all....

We have all of our reservations confirmed and just booked at the Temple Gate in Ennis (Old Ground was booked)....both Michele's Quick Picks (I have her book....very helpful)

Only thing we need to do is rent a car. Saw some posts about Hertz but will probably go to Dooleys

I prefer the Temple Gate to the Old Ground. Brogan's is good for food at the right price Bacon and Cabbage is a traditional special even if they have put the price up to 10Euro. Dont know which dates we are going down but might see you there.

I would choose Temple Gate over Old Ground, any day. I have stayed in both and, for what it is worth, I thought the service was better at Temple Gate. We have had some delicious pub meals in their adjacent pub and a good seissun or two, as well. The name of it is escaping me at the moment though.

My traveling companions told me that Templegate was as close as I would ever get to "entering a convent", as it is built on the site of a 18th or 19th century convent. biggrin

Bit,

I think the name of the pub you're looking for is (following in the vein of the place being built on the site of a convent) Preacher's Pub.

Actually, I have no idea if that's where the name came from, but I think that's the place you're talking about...

Correct. Not a bad place but with so many pubs and so much going on around town I can't remember the last time I was in there.

Bit,

I make a mean bowl of Irish stew, meself! Every St. Patrick's Day I make Irish stew, potato farls, and scones.

Oh, man, now I'm hungry for that... Gotta thaw some lamb!

Slan,
Kate
