how to transport gifts to Ireland? Hi Michele and the gang, I will be leaving in 2 weeks (Easter) and have several gifts I will be bringing over for relatives. Space size of items is about equivalent to size that would fit in a carry-on bag. However, I can't carry them on because my carry-on is reserved for "must have" items on the plane. How is the best way to get them over there, time-wise (so they arrive either same time or before I do) and price-wise? Send them ahead and if so, how? (Re: value, I read someplace -- now when I need it, I can't find it again -- that if value is over a certain amount ($200??????), the recipient will have to pay some sort of tax.)Bring them as an extra check-in piece and pay (I will already be checking in 2 pieces)? Is that an expensive way to go? Please help, I'm running out of time. Thanks much. J2Spring
Re: how to transport gifts to Ireland? Hi j2spring,
I do not recommend sending them separately either by mail or UPS or FedEx. There is too much red tape and customs forms that you need to fill out. You wouldn't have time to get the forms from the Irish government. Also if they are not filled out just right your packages could end up stuck in an endless government bureaucracy. And, yes, there is a possibility that taxes could apply.
I would take them as checked luggage. Call your airline to find out the luggage limit and any additional charges.
