driving time

Can you tell me if this plan is workable?

8:30 AM (approx.) Catch AirCoach from my Dublin guesthouse back to airport to pick up rental car.

Drive to Newgrange (N51 ?) and spend at least two hours there. (This will be on a Tues.)

Drive to Kilkenny where I already have a confirmed B&B booking for the night. Advice on route and estimate of driving time would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sure I'll be back soon with more questions. I'm into the nitty-gritty of planning for travel in May.

Hi Gail,

You are probably looking at at least three hours from Newgrange to Kilkenny. You could take a different route back. The N2 is a straight shot back toward Dublin, then the M50 to the N7. Then at Naas the N9 & N10 to Kilkenny.

It might take longer than two hours at Newgrange. It all depends on how many people are ahead of you. Only a limited number of people can enter the tomb at one time. So as soon as you get to the visitor's center put your name on the list. You can visit the musuem and/or have lunch while waiting.

Hello Michele,

Please excuse the rather terse opening question in my post of last night. I apologize! I had been at the computer for hours researching travel details for my trip. After a good night's sleep, much better!

I'll plan my route from Newgrange to Kilkenny as you suggested. Thank you for the info, the drive time seems reasonable.

I don't know where I got the N51 info to go from Dublin Airport to Newgrange, but I just checked AA.com route planner and it suggests the M1 most of the way, then exiting to the N51 and on to Newgrange. It'll be my first day driving on the left (car will automatic). Would you think the M1 might be easier, fewer junctions, than the N51?

Hi Gail,

No problem. Everyone has their own writing style on forums. Some leave out openings and closings. As long as the message is clear I'm happy.

The M1 is a relatively new highway and you can take it north from the airport to Drogheda. It will be quicker than the old N1 Dublin/Belfast road. And since it is a divided expressway type highway, easier to negotiate on your first day driving. In Drogheda look for signs to Newgrange or Bru na Boinne or N51. You could also take this same road back to the M50 but I thought you might enjoy a different route, perhaps stopping off at the Hill of Tara on your way south.
