B&B Books

G'day!

Anyone have a suggestion for a good book with reviews of B&Bs? I have the hotel book, green book and farmhouses book from the tourist board. Mostly a listing type thing.

I need ones with independent reviews. Going in October and attempting to be loose with the schedule. I want to roam and stop when I want but I want nice places to stay. I am looking for complete reviews, personal knowledge, style and that little something extra. What ones do you like? Thaks in advance for the help!!!!!

Michele (this board's host) has written the very book you seek. Her "Best Little Guide to Ireland" gives detailed listings of the B&Bs she has hand-picked. After reading her listings you will have a good idea of the B&Bs setting, the home's decor and features and even the disposition and specialties of each host.

Do take a look and see if my book might be what you are looking for (thanks Corey!). My reviews are very detailed and I stay in each B&B, guesthouse or hotel that I review. You should also take a look at my "Lodgings" page, which I update periodically. I don't have reviews there but I do list places that I have either personally stayed or visited to inspect and that meet my requirements. You can click through to each lodging's website from that page (provided they have one). You might want to print that page to take with you.

There are many books available that review B&Bs in Ireland, however none are as up to date as mine since I update my book every year. I also visit Ireland at least twice a year to keep up on what is happening around the country and I periodically re-visit accommodations to be sure they are still up to snuff. I do not charge for places to be listed as some guidebooks do, which I think keeps me unbiased. If B&Bs start slipping or go downhill they are deleted from my book.

Thanks guys. I decided to get Michelle's book. It looks good. Michelle, if you were to choose one B&B book (not the tourist board ones) to take with you other than your own which one would it be?

I think the book I would choose would be the Bridgestone Guide to the "100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland" by John & Sally McKenna. It seems pretty up to date and I agree with many of their listings. If you can't find it in your country it is readily available all over Ireland.

Michelle, Amazon has the Bridgstone book for 2001. What do you think? Get that one or not? Am I OK in October without reservations? Thanks!!!!!

2005 Book

I would wait till you get to Ireland to get the most up to date book. You will find it in many bookstores and maybe at the tourist offices. This way you will have the latest 2005 edition instead of 2001. Many things can change in four years.

You always need reservations in Dublin. I also suggest reservations for your first and last nights in Ireland. On your last night you already know where you need to be, so why not? On your first day you will most likely be tired and having a place reserved is comforting if you need to rest. There is a Bank Holiday at the end of October making the 28, 29, 30 & 31 a popular time for traveling around Ireland. The rest of October is generally slower and you will be safe winging it.
