My fiance and I are flying to Ireland for a much-anticipated trip on Saturday. We'll have eight days to explore Galway, Doolin (where we'll be attending a wedding), Ring of Kerry or Ring of Beara, and Dublin.
We're hoping to spend two or three days in the Ring of Kerry or Ring of Beara, and ideally, we'd like to go on one or two hikes. We don't really have any preference between the two rings, so we'll probably choose the destination based on the hiking trails. We're both somewhat athletic and are hoping to find a trail that's at least 4 or 6 miles long and moderately hilly. Are there any trails you can recommend, and if so, can you give us detailed information on how to find the trailhead?
I am not a hiker myself so can't give you detailed directions on trails, etc. There are books that you can buy about hiking in Ireland. Otherwise, I suggest stopping by the tourist office in each area you will be in for detailed brochures, maps, etc. on the hiking in the area. You may also want to purchase the very detailed Ordnance Survey Maps, available at the tourist office or shops around Ireland. Having a compass is a must.
Here are some links you should look at about hiking in Ireland so that you can decide on what trails you are interested in:
You are both so prompt with your responses. I appreciate the advice. I think the loop walks on the Beara site Bill suggested should work out perfectly.
