Best Route Bunratty to Lismore

Taking a CIE tour that ends in Bunratty. We would like to go from Bunratty to Lismore Castle then back to Dublin. We checked both the trains and bus routes in these areas and found no service to Lismore. Does anyone know how we can get there besides renting a car. Thanks

You could take the train from Limerick (or Ennis or Sixmilebridge) to Waterford (or Carrick-on-Suir) and then a bus or taxi to and from Lismore Castle, and then train from Waterford to Dublin.

Unless you are family friends of the Duke of Devonshire, or plan to rent the Castle during a 'VACANT' period, I'm not sure WHY you would WANT to, though ...  confuse confuse confuse
The last that I knew, the Castle was DEFINITELY NOT open to the public -- other than the Gardens and the Stables area.  The art displayed is interesting, but much of it is rather, uhmmm -- ECLECTIC biggrin biggrin.  There's a LOT of audio/video, 'Performance Art' and very few 'Traditional' stuff.

Marie,

Welcome to my forum. Bob has filled you in on public transportation from Bunratty to Lismore. Now, may I ask you WHY? Are your ancestors from Lismore? The castle is not open to the public. The gardens are open but there are better ones to see around Ireland. Just wondering what the attraction is to Lismore.

Hi Michele,

Sorry - I did not see your reply until now!  Thanks for writing.  Well, since you ask, my husband  has family (we have not yet contacted them) who live in a townland called Cooldrishoge which is actually very close to the Castle.  His Great Grandmother left there to come to the USA in 1903 - the cottage is still there and it is very important to us to see it.  After looking over your book, we have decided that taking a tour is the best route for us to take for the first part of our trip.  We are looking at a CIE tour that starts with our departure from NY to Dublin on Saturday October 15.  We leave dublin for the 6 day Taste of Ireland tour that ends on  Thursday morning in Bunratty when other people on the tour either go to Shannon or Dublin airports.  We want to leave Bunratty and go directly to Lismore, stay overnight and maybe on Friday morning go to Waterford...have a look around and take 3 hour train ride back to Dublin.  We depart Sunday morning from Dublin for home.

Your comments, advice, opinion, etc. will be extremely welcome as this is our first trip!
Best Regards,
Marie and Mike
P.S.  Love your book, by the way!
I

Marie,

Thanks for your kind comments about my book. I see that your family connection is calling you to Lismore. In that case you must see the cottage and area. Do as Bob suggests and get a taxi to Limerick train station (or perhaps your tour bus may drop you there) and take the train to Waterford. From there get a taxi or bus to Lismore. You can click on the links above to access schedules, etc. for the particular day you will be traveling. Then back to Waterford and train to Dublin.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Michele
