May 5th!!!!!!! Questions....

Greetings all you Eire-o-philes!smile

I leave May5th for Dublin.  I will be in Ireland for 13 days.  I need some advice, please.  confuse

1.  Phones:  Please tell me which phone to buy for calling both within Ireland and home to US, and what the deal is on buying minutes. Also where to buy.

2.  How much are cars with drivers, (for a distance from say, Westport to Donegal Town) and is this something I should be booking from here if I am interested?

3.  Last time, I bought extra insurance online, prior to the trip, as I had a car the whole time I was there.  This time, I am unsure which days I will need a car.  How should I navigate this?

4.  How good is public transportation for getting from one town to the other?  Where online do I find the rail schedule and bus schedule?  I imagine there is a national rail system, but what about buses?  Are there many, as there are here?

5.  Anything special you know of that happening while I am there?  My "bases" will be Dubin and Donegal (Creevy), outside of Donegal Town.  I am flexible of when I will be over on the West coast.

I think that's enough for now.

Oh, yeah, one more thing....Do I just catch a taxi at Dubiln airport, much as I would at any airport here?  Sorry to ask some seemingly dumb questions, but this trip is pretty different from my last one 4 years ago.

Thanks,

Marie

We arrived Dublin terminal 2, and walked to terminal 1, outside to ground transportation. Located in the outer lane were the various bus services into the city. To the right or rear of the buss area was a taxi staging area. Real easy to access which ever form of transportation you choose to get downtown. Dan

Thanks so much, Dan.  biggrin I drove in to Dublin last time, and I do NOT want to do it again.  So, it will be a relaxing taxi ride to Kilnamanagh from the airport.

Marie --

Congrats and happy Travels. smile

MY answers to your questions.  Hopefully, either Michele or some of the other Irregulars will fill in the Gaps in my info ..... biggrin

1) Tesco seems to have the best deals that I know of.  You can get a cheap, basic phone and SIM for under 20 Euro.  Add a 10 Euro 'Top Up' and it will probably still have minutes left when you head home.  They only charge 2 Euro cents per minute to call the US and they DOUBLE your call credit on purchases of 10 Euro or more.  They have stores in most larger towns.

Nearest to Kilnamanagh:

Booth Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 (D22), Clondalkin, Dublin 22, Ireland    3.2 km NW

Blessington Road, Dublin 24, Ireland  1.6 km SW

2)  I have NO idea, but think it would be best to AT LEAST have a 'Short List' prior to arrival ... ???  confuse confuse

3)  Insurance4carhire has 'Blanket' coverage for ALL European rentals for 12 months.  MIGHT be a tad pricey, though, if you only need a couple days' coverage ...

4) Pretty good ...  For Rail timetables and bus schedules, check timetables and schedules.

5) I have no info. hmm hmm

1) Tesco mobile ie

http://www.tescomobile.ie/

2) Expensive you would be better off hiring a car for this section and as part of the answer to.

4) Bus and train networks can be good or awful depending on your location and if you are considering rural routes you could have a problem.

Many thanks for these answers.  I used Insurance4carhire last time, too.  I will contact them.

Tesco....got it!  wink.gif

Tony:  OK, no hired driver.no.gif

Rails/Buses good.  Check.  I will study schedules.  My problem with "planning" for this trip is that some of it is dependant upon the folks on the other side of the Atlantic.  I am not able to build a set itinerary from here.

You guys are great. clap.gif

Tony:  What should I not miss between Westport and Donegal Town?  I drove it straight through last time, as I had miles and miles to cover in my mad dash around the entire isalnd!biggrin.gif P.S.  I was also exhausted from climibing Croagh Patrick.yawn.gif

There is some amassing coastline if you are not afraid to head down narrow lanes to get there. Achill Island of course and the Ceide Fields away from the Coast at Foxford is the Michael Davitt Museum and the Woolen Mills. Into Sligo (home of my Grandfather) and you could take the W B Yeats walking tour along with Carrowmore tombs  , visit Parks Castle, walk above the low cliffs at Aughris or any number of other things before you get to Donegal.  (Think you need to come back and take a proper look next time)

Marie,

I see that everyone has you sorted out while I was away from the forum for a few days dealing with "technical difficulties". Gotta love today's technology - when it works properly!

Westport to Donegal:

Museum of Country Life: Turlough (outside Castlebar)
Parke's Castle (nr. Sligo)
Drumcliff (north of Sligo - Yeats Grave)
Belleek China Factory
Rossnowlagh Beach

Plus what Tony said. But you can't do it all. Choose what interests you.

Thanks, Michele!  I have been to Rossnowlagh Beach, but no doubt will go again as Creevy is right in the neighborhood.

I will also be following your advice about the east coast and the tours to Newgrange and Glendalogh.

Hi Marie

A few years ago, driving from Boyle to Ardara, we really enjoyed the Gleniff Horseshoe drive that took us up close and personal with Benbulben. If I remember correctly, you turn right a couple of km's north of Cliffoney. I'm sure I got the idea from this forum.

have another great trip

Stewart

Stewart,

It is a great drive and brings you up close to the mountains. I found that many decades ago. It is north of Sligo and signposted on the main road.
