We're traveling to Ireland this summer with 4 kids - ages 16, 14, 11 and 5. We expect to eat a lot of meals in pubs but would also like to enjoy the music and entertainment. I don't think there is any issue with the kids having dinner but I have read that the music often doesn't start until 9 pm. Are the children allowed in the pubs at night to listen to the music?
I found this in the hot news section. Sorry for posting a question already answered.
Officially children under 18 are not allowed in pubs after 10pm from May-Sept & after 9pm in the winter. Those 18 or over should bring a photo ID or passport in order to be served drinks. The drinking age in Ireland is 18. Those wondering about bringing children to music pubs should know that each pub sets their own rules. Well-behaved children eating a meal with their parents may be overlooked at official children's closing time.
Welcome to my forum. No problem with your posting. Although there is a "rule" about children in pubs, I find that rules are often bent in Ireland. It depends on the individual pub, where it is located and other factors. Even though music is supposed to start at 9pm it can sometimes start much later.
You might want to consider some other venues, especailly with a child as young as 5. Have you looked at the castle banquets or Irish Night in the Corn Barn in Bunratty?
Your family will enjoy that. Since seating is on long benches for the banquet, before it starts approach one of the people working there and let them know you want to sit on the end for ease of getting on and off with your 5-year-old. Ask about a booster seat. Otherwise you could be squished into the middle. They should accommodate your young child that way if you make your needs known.
