We have 8 people going to Ireland in June. We are renting a house in Wicklow for 4 nights and then a house in Kenmare for 6 nights. 2 parents, 4 kids and 2 grandparents.
We were planning to rent two cars. But I have seen several postings suggesting that a van with a driver might be a better option.
Two car rentals look like they will be about 1200 - 1400 euro for the 11 days plus gas. A van with a driver will be about 3000 - 4000 euro for the same time.
Based on your experience which do you recommend? Cars give us more freedom but we are separate for much of the sight seeing experience. Any insight is appreciated.
Having a van and driver is very expensive. Since I don't know what your budget is I would say if money is no object hiring the chauffeur-driven van would be a carefree way to travel around Ireland. If, on the other hand, you are trying to save money renting the two cars would be a good option. You can also buy two cell phones to keep in communication as you travel around.
With the cars you would be separated during the driving times. However, you are probably going to be stopping at a lot of places and meeting up for your sightseeing. Only you can determine what is best for your family.
