achill or connamara ?

We'll be traveling for 12 days in Ireland with our kids 4 & 7.  Our itinerary so far is 2 nights each in Dublin, Cahir, Dingle, Corofin.  With our last 2 nights before heading back to a Dublin airport hotel should we slow down a little and spend an extra night in Corofin to allow for weather, downtime and golf, then one night near Clifden to explore Connemara?  Or should we push to see Achill and spend our last 2 nights there?  My Irish friends tell me Achill is a MUST but I'm worried about the extra driving with the kids, especially if the weather is wet.  Thanks for your advice!

I would say that either of those two choices, Clifden or Achill, will be quite the push both from Corofin and back to Dublin. I would suggest adding a night to both Dingle and Corofin and then heading to Dublin from Corofin.  You could do a Connemara day trip from Corofin.

Achill with a toddler in tow would not be my choice. There are more choices for rainy day activities in and around Dingle and Corofin.

travelmom,

I would skip Achill too. Let's face it - you can't see everything no matter how nice it is. Stick to your plans of two nights in each place. Although I might choose Kilkenny in place of Cahir. What are your plans in Corofin? It is out in the Irish countryside and not exactly a base most people choose.

I chose Cahir because we're staying at the Carrigeen Castle B&B and want to see the Rock and Mitchelstown caves too. I found a nice self catering house near Corofin & Burren national park. I know its a little out of the way but it gives my kids lots of space to roam and we should be able to do some nice walks from the house. And it looks like its within close enough driving distance to Lahinch for golf for the boys, Drumoland for tea for the girls, and the cliffs (also might go to Aillwee caves if we don't get to see Mitchelstown caves). I'm thinking of spending a third night there to give us some downtime and then spending 1 night at a B&B near Clifden and spending the day exploring near there. I'm trying to fit in a lot of sights but leave things flexible since with 2 little ones I never know how much we'll really get to see in one day. :) I'ld love any advice on sights I'm leaving out too. Thanks!

Leave Achill for another time and you can drive the Connamara loop from Corofin (lovely spot) if you chose not to move accommodation. I would opt for the Ailwee caves and Bird of prey centre which might be more enjoyable for the youngsters. There are quite a few open Courses within reach although not a golfer myself I cant comment on their quality's. One of the neighbours plays at Woodstock? near Ennis and the East Clare club down the Lough.
