Going to Ireland for the first time at the end of June, 12 days of driving around. Seeking input on our plan to spend the last night in Dublin.
Idea is to drop off the rental at the airport in the afternoon (Thursday), travel into the city and stay in one of the livelier/interesting areas (Temple Bar?), and then get up early and head back to the airport for our 10:20 AM flight home.
A couple of questions - is this a sensible plan, in terms of transportation? Can anyone suggest places to stay? Looking for something at the moderate cost level.
I have suggested Dublin hotels on my Lodgings page. But tell me more. Where are you driving from on your last day? Are you stopping for sightseeing along the way? What time do you anticipate dropping off the car? Do you realize that you need to check-in for your flight at 7:20 am? What do you want to do in Dublin on your last day in Ireland? Will you have seen Dublin City at the beginning of your trip or will this be your only chance?
Thanks for the quick reply, and appreciate the reminder of the need to be at the airport early. The evening before our flight will be our only time in Dublin. We know it will be just a quick taste, not looking to go to any of the major attractions, just want to wander around a bit on foot and get a nice meal. We'll be driving up from the area near Glendalough, staying the night before in Laragh. Want to drop off the car by 4 pm. Your lodging page suggestions are helpful too.
We had one of our best meals last week in the temple bar area, right across from Temple Bar at Shack's. It was also very reasonable. There is plenty of walking around and craic to be found in Temple bar. I can't say where you can stay there but I found Dublin expensive when it comes to Lodging compared to the rest of Ireland. Maybe someone else has some suggestions. You may want to see if you can reserve a taxi the night before to pick you up at a certain time.
If you can, I would suggest dropping off the car as early as possible at Dublin Airport. Then you will have time to explore Dublin a little. Take the hop-on hop-off bus tour (a bit over an hour) and then see what interests you. There are some interesting night-time tours such as pub crawls, music tours, storytelling, etc. Try this: http://www.visitdublin.com/see_and_do/tours/Tours_of_Dublin_and_Tour_Guides
Pre-book a taxi to the airport the night before or plan on taking the bus.
I had a reasonably good experience at O'Neill's Victorian Pub and B&B in Dublin (there are two O'Neill's - make sure it says Victorian). It was reasonably priced, large rooms, a bit noisy near the train, but definitely good value for Dublin. Right near Trinity College. Decent food in the pub, run by three brothers.
