Ballyvaughan Landmark Sign - GONE!

The iconic landmark sign in Ballyvaughan has been removed. no

You can read more at the IrishFireside.

That sign is an ICON, a fixture and tourist attraction in Ireland. Even tourism Ireland uses that picture as a marketing tool. What are the road services thinking? Or not thinking?

There is a Facebook page devoted to bringing it back: http://tinyurl.com/6agvaxl  I suggest everyone post their thoughts there and on Twitter to see what happens. What a crime!

I started this line on TA yesterday and Corry has it on IF.  Its not just this sign but all similar ones that are being removed.

I was looking for it in Ballyvaughan, and wondered why I couldn't find it :(

I don't know that the new signs are any better. In the high gale winds Ireland had in May many of them were "turned around" and pointing in the wrong direction. Surely there is a better way to secure them? I have noticed in the past several years that signs are filtering traffic to the main highways at the expense of other more rural roads. Try and find your way off the motorway and you will go over hill and dale. I understand from the articles that the Ballyvaughan sign is filtering everyone inland instead of on the coast road, which is more scenic.

Signs pointing the wrong way are not because of winds they are deliberately turned for "sport" by the Leprechauns (or idle youth with too much time on there hands).

Tony,

Yeah, I know the local "kids" get a kick out of turning the signs. But the gale force winds were so bad they could have done so too. They keep removing signs and putting up new ones. Don't know why they can't make "turn proof" signs. Haven't they heard of concrete or super glue?

Tony,

Thanks for sharing that. Some excellent comments and a good article. I would have added a comment of my own but can't figure out how to post there. I had the option of signing in with my Twitter account. Only problem is the Irish Times will then have access to my whole account including all personal info, etc. Can't allow that!

Yes. Clare Council have declined the offer of the sign being replaced.

The sign will be back... and "protected" this time.

The sign is eventually back and this time in the same place rather than down the road and round a corner, I believe somewhat lacking in originality but haven't been over there. (prob in a couple of weeks)

Tony,

Does that mean that they actually disposed of the original sign and just "duplicated" it? Would love to see a photo of the new sign if you take your camera along.
