Woo-hoo! I'm so excited...I have decided to splurge on The Merrion Hotel in Dublin. Ok the deal I got isn't that cheap...it's still expensive...but they did include free full Irish breakfast, plus free parking...and the price is very slightly reduced over their regular prices. It's 280 euros for a Superior King room in the Garden Wing. (Or 250 euros if you want the Queen room in the Garden wing.) I believe it was called the Summer Savings Special...even though our trip is September I guess that is still summer in Ireland! Those prices include all the taxes and fees, and you can find them on the Merrion HOtel's web-site.

I'm happy because now I can feel excited about Dublin...whereas before I was frustrated and worried about sleeping well. I think the Garden Wing rooms at the Merrion Hotel are about as quiet as I can find for Dublin...and there are a lot of guest reviews from guests who report having a good night's sleep in those rooms. Plus I like the location of the Merrion Hotel. We also get a separate tub and shower.
The price is MORE than we like to pay. But occasionally we splurge. We have never stayed in a 5-star hotel. We aren't hoity-toity type of people...we are pretty down to earth.
If anybody is interested in the special, I found at first the 2 nights I wanted were blocked out. But I kept checking every day and 1 of those nights opened up. I booked the 1 night, and when I emailed The Merrion, they were able to add an extra night at the same rate, so I got 2 nights.
BED SIZES AT THE MERRION: On the Merrion's web-site, a King bed is 6 '6", and a Queen is 6' !!! Those are unusually large bed sizes. It doesn't say if that is the width or the length but I think it must be the width. I think the "Queen" would have been big enough for us, since their Queen is as wide as a USA King bed, but the Queen rooms in the Garden Wing have a city view...only the Superior King rooms in the Garden wing have the garden view. I'm pretty sure the garden views are the quieter rooms.
If anybody has fainted at these prices...don't read on any further...these rooms are the least expensive rooms at The Merrion.
When I do a lot of research, I am always looking for that "click" in my head and that spark in my soul...that instinctive feeling when I KNOW I've found the room that is right for me. I found it at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin. They are very prompt with their replies after you book and have questions.
I can't wait to post some fun questions about sites, food, and music in Dublin!
Way to go! Glad to hear you have finally made your decision and I hope you sleep like a baby at the Merrion. As far as staying at a 5-star place, don't be intimidated. In my experience a 5-star hotel will treat everyone equally whether they are wearing a tux or jeans. Who knows, you could be an incognito rock star?!! If you can afford to stay there you are as good as everyone else there. Enjoy the 5-star experience.
Michele: I've always been a writer with a big imagination. How did you know I'm planning to pretend to be an incognito rock star at the Merrion? Hopefully nobody will hear me singing however.
I am a bit worried about how to figure out who to tip because I think they have a large staff at The Merrion. I might have to post another question about tipping. What does everybody else do when staying at a 4- or 5-star hotel with lots of staff... Normally we stay at small cozy family-run b&bs or guesthouses which are sometimes entirely family-run.
Once I stayed at the Ritz in San Francisco with my daughters because I got a great deal for 1 night and we wanted a girls weekend. But I was so bewildered by all the staff who opened doors for us and greeted us and showed us to our room etc...that I didn't end up tipping anybody!
At a hotel in Costa Rica, I decided to get an envelope and put a sincere thank you note and a tip and hand it to a young lady who went way out of her way to serve us and welcome us every day...that turned out well as she seemed to appreciate the more personal touch with the note. She really made our stay special.
Sometimes if a hotel room is outstandingly clean, I leave a couple dollars and a note that says "Thank you" on the bathroom counter in a hotel room...
What do you all do? My husband doesn't like to tip, so it is up to me to decide what I think is best.
When you are a rock star it doesn't matter if you can sing as long as the music is loud enough!
As you know, people in Ireland make a certain minimum wage (even wait staff in restaurants) so it is not like here in the USA where they live on their tips. However, the following should help and is at your discretion for superior service:
Housekeeping: €1 -2 per night
Concierge: None, unless they go out of their way
Porter: €1 per bag
Room service: €2 - 5
Taxi: round up to the next euro or for extra service 10%
Our Dublin Splurge was the Morrison Hotel. We loved it, even though I would never have paid the price here! We checked in on my birthday around noon even though they said no check-in before 3p.m. We had planned to leave our luggage and return to check-in. That is what the couple in front of us were required to do. Much to our surprise and the other couple's dismay, I was handed my room keys and told to go on up. As we left teh front desk, the woman said "By the way, Happy Birthday". I must have had a quizzical expression because she said "It was on your license".
We settled in, grabbed our cameras and headed out to explore. When we got back, there was a note from the Bar staff advising that my complimentary birthday prosecos were waiting downstairs. When we claimed our drinks, they came with wexford strawberries and dark chocolate. So if you have a special occassion, it might be worth letting the Merrion know that you are celebrating.
CowboyCraic: I always know that when you pop on the forums, you will have a great story to tell, or some interesting advice! Sounds like such a nice birthday at the Morrisson.
We love staying in a great variety of accommodations. I love a place which has something unique about it, no matter whether its a 2-star place or a 4-star place...or maybe it doesn't have any stars at all.
