Dan Dooley CAR RENTAL: I'm Required to pay LLI or Limited Liability insurance, is that right?

Hello Michele and Ireland car rental experts:

I hope I understand the complexities of Ireland car rentals. With Dan Dooley for example, I am required to pay the LLI or Limited Liability insurance and this cannot be waived, am I correct?

The only insurance I can waive is the CDW, by putting the car rental on a World MC, is this right, and then I can waive the CDW, which is covered by the World MC? (We did call MC Assist number...thanks for that suggestion.)

Also has anybody rented a Ford Focus or similar category (I think it was a compact which holds 4 adults plus luggage...we don't want to be too squeezed even though we have only 2 people.) Is this a good car? Any better cars in this category?

I'm concerned about seat comfort due to my tendency to develop bursitis of the hip...a seat with some comfty cushioning is nice.

Thanks for any advice!

Also, Michele, do you now recommend Dan Dooley over Kemwel? We want to rent from a company which doesn't add hidden fees at the last minute, that gives you the whole price up front.

I have rented from Dooley often and have always found all fees to be up front -- nothing like one other experience I had with another company in Ireland.  Also the car we had in the spring was a Ford Focus.  Really had plenty of room and there were four of us, so you should have no issues with room.

People tend to sometimes over analyze car rental decisions, but at least for me, I do the following:

Rent from Dooleys -- no hidden fees.

Pay for the extra insurance -- peace of mind no matter what happens, as I would only be out of pocket 100 euros.

Then get on with your wonderful trip and enjoy yourself.  I really do feel too many people fixate on the car rental issue too much. It can be a bit of a challenge, but after many trips to Ireland I have found Dooleys and the extra insurance to be what allows us to relax when we get there.

Melissa,

Yes, you must pay LLI. Most car companies have it built into the quote. But Dooley lists it so you can see what you are getting. With World MC you will decline CDW and Super CDW. You must pay a 25 euro fee to do that. But when I called their NJ office they gave me that as a freebie. Ask about it. All they can say is no. Use the code: dochara for a 10% discount.

A 2,000 euro "hold" will be placed on your cc when declining CDW.

Kemwel is a broker and will book you with any number of car companies. The company they book you with may well have additional fees. Depends on which one.

Dooley is the only one I know of that has only one more thing you must purchase at the airport. That is a tank of petrol. If you return the car full you will get a refund. I've rented from Dooley the last several times and been happy with the service and experience.

I think you will be fine with the Ford Focus. Have you thought of taking a foam pad with you?

Michele

Monty,

Your advice on car rental makes great sense to me.  Is the Ford Focus considered a compact or intermediate?  Do you get manual or auto?

I got a quote from Dooley for $527 for 10 days and that included Super CDW.  Does that seem reasonable?

Thanks!

To take the full extent of the insurance, I think your price sounds about right.  If you haven't done so yet, book it online at the Dooley site and put in the promotional code word Dochara for a discount (used to be 10 percent and now it is 5, but every dollar counts).  It works every time I try it.

If you have driven in Ireland before and can drive a stick, it's probably about $100 cheaper and you will get better gas mileage.  I've done both, but for the price I do the manual.  But certainly take the automatic if that is what you are used to.

The Ford Focus over there is actually a pretty good size car with surprising trunk space.  We had four people on our trip and did great with that vehicle. That is what we have had the last two trips.  I really like it.  Get a diesel if they have one, as the mileage is great.

Monty,

I noticed recently that promo word dochara now only gives a 5% discount. But I have a new one for you: irish dancer It will give you 10% off still.

Monty and Michele,

Thanks for the discount codes. I haven't booked yet. I'm going to keep checking rates and hope they go down a little. Do you think it might be cheaper after the first of the year?

mkay,

Could be. Last time I rented from them I checked the prices every day for about a month. For about 3 days the price went down to almost half. I jumped on that deal. Have the quotes emailed to you as they are good for a week.
