Need a little advice from our Irish friends We will be arriving in Dublin on September 27 and leaving on October 5. I have jotted down an itinerary that has lots of room for suggestions, hoping that you can help us out. Here is what we are currently thinking -
September 27 - Dublin
September 28 Galway or September 28 and 29 in Doolin or Ballyvaughan. I understand that Doolin has great pubs and we may be interested in some fishing if anyone has suggestions regarding that.
September 30 is at the Dromolord Castle
October 1 Dingle - Ring of Kerry and explore Dingle
October 2 Killarney - My husband previously visitied Cross Haven and would like a drive through again.
October 3 Cork or Kilkenny - Is it nicer to follow the coastline up through wicklow to Dublin? October 4 Dublin
October 5 home
The nights in Dublin and the castle cannot be changed. We are interested in the local scene, pubs, fun, music. Have heard about the Bunratty Castle banquet. Could we do that the night before the castle? Again, open to any suggestions. We are just in the process of booking our B and B's. Also open to suggestions as I would like to do some Christmas shopping while we are there - at least that is what I am telling my husband
You actually have 9 days in Ireland not 10. Since you are traveling at the end of Sept/beginning of Oct the days will be shorter and you can't fit as much in.
What is your travel style? Do you want to spend lots of time driving all over Ireland seeing things from the car? Do you prefer to slow down to an intermediate pace and take a little more time? What is on your "must see" list?
Below are my day by day comments:
September 27 - Dublin * Fine
September 28 Galway or September 28 and 29 in Doolin or Ballyvaughan. I understand that Doolin has great pubs and we may be interested in some fishing if anyone has suggestions regarding that. * At this time of year you may be better off staying in Galway for two days.
September 30 is at the Dromolord Castle * Fine. This would be the night for the banquet as it is nearby.
October 1 Dingle - Ring of Kerry and explore Dingle. * No! Seeing Dingle alone is what you can do today. The ROK is another day trip and you do not have time for it.
October 2 Killarney - My husband previously visitied Cross Haven and would like a drive through again. * Have you thought about 2 nights in Killarney, skipping Cork and Kilkenny? Not much time for anything with the one night stays.
October 3 Cork or Kilkenny - Is it nicer to follow the coastline up through wicklow to Dublin? * See previous day.
Thank you for your replies. We would really just like to play things by ear. We enjoy meeting people, the pubs, music. We don't have any must do other than staying at a castle, which we are doing. We just want to enjoy ourselves and takes things as they come.
So do two nights in Galway, the castle, should we go all the way down to Dingle or are the other suggestions for finishing up our trip.
As you are travelling late September you could wing it without too much trouble. Plan some stepping stones and have the number of 2 or 3 accommodations at these locations so you can phone the next place just after breakfast and spend the day getting there. I would be tempted to reverse the trip taking in the Scenery on the way round and run over the slab (M6) Galway to Dublin at the end. That way you could let the weather do a bit of planning for you when you are here. The Wicklow mountains are wonderful in the sunshine but a god forsaken place in the low cloud and miserable rain. The ring of Kerry and Dingle suffer the same fate if the weather closes in for a few hours.

If playing it by ear, you can decide on Dingle depending on weather and other things that are going on during your trip. Or you can stay two nights in Killarney and do Dingle as a day trip.
