help with Ireland itinerary please.

My husband and I are planning a 2 week trip to Ireland in the middle of October. Below is our current itinerary. Does it seem too packed? too much driving? Any other comments will be greatly appreciated.

Dublin 2 nights
Boyne Valley/Trim 1 night (New Grange and other sites).
Galway 3 nights (including trip to connemara)
Doolin 1 (Burren)
Dingle 2 (exploring the peninsula)
Kilkenny 2 (Rock of Cashil, other sites in area)
Wexford 2 (Fringe Festival - anyone know about this festival?)

Any sites in those areas, besides what's mentioned, that are not to be missed? Any grand estates to visit? We also would like to stay in B and Bs, so specific recommendations will also be welcome.

Thanks!

laurahs,

Welcome to my forum. Your itinerary looks fine to me. I like the mostly multiple-night stays where you added a couple of one-nighters to break it up. I assume you will spend your last night near Dublin after Wexford?

I've not been to the Wexford Fringe Festival but a look at the website shows a very eclectic mix of things to see and do. Some things in the area:

Hook Head Lighthouse
Wexford Town
Kilmore Quay (cute town with thatched houses)
John F Kennedy Arboretum
Duncannon Fort (check openings)

Since you are visiting Ireland in October not all sites will be open. Before adding sightseeng to your list check on opening times so you don't go out of your way for a place that might be closed.

If you are staying in Trim be sure to make time to see Trim Castle. Newgrange and Bru na Boinne will take at least half the day.

Some good stops between the east and Galway are Belvedere House & Gardens and Clonmacnoise Monastic Site.

A couple of places not to miss in the Kilkenny area are Kells Priory, Jerpoint Abbey & Cahir Castle.

I have a good list of places to stay on my Lodgings page. And don't forget to see my special deals and discounts for 2011:

When you ask about "grand estates" are you talking about historic houses, gardens or something else?

Michele,

Thanks so much for your reply - and for hosting this wonderful website!  We will definately check on the schedule of the major sites to be sure they're open.  Re your question on grand estates, yes, I was thinking of historic houses that can be visited that might give a sense of the history.

I will also take a look at your lodging site.

Thanks again!!

laurahs,

Belvedere House would fit the bill. Muckross House & Gardens (if you are traveling through Killarney on your route), Ardgillan Castle (Skerries), Westport House (if in the area), Kilkenny Castle & Rothe House, and for something very uniuqe the Swiss Cottage in Cahir.
