Is Kinsale a mad house during the Gourmet festival?

I've been in Kinsale on a Bank Holiday and it was chaos. Everyone was triple parked on those tiny little roads. Some lads from a local pub had to come out and lift up a car and set it aside so that traffic could get through. Everything was chock a block.

We are in a deep recession right now so that may impact and cut down on the crowds this year. But be prepared for lots of people and if you decide to stay, make advance B&B and restaurant reservations. Bring your patience.

My personal view on Kinsale is, nice place to visit on the way to somewhere else. I don't really (by choice) fit in with the Foodie and Yacht brigade that have enveloped the quaint old fishing village.

You might want to contact a few B&Bs in Kinsale to ask if they are full now or have vacancies. That might be an indication of what the festival is shaping up to be this year. When I was in Ireland this spring there were very few tourists around.

Even though Kinsale is a nice destination, especially for gourmet food options, it has been my experience that the place is quite overpriced for everything you do. The B&Bs are higher there, and food prices quite pricey. I agree with your research on this town.

I think we've moved away from Kinsale although my wife would still like to spend a week in Co. Cork along the coast somewhere. We have done Skibbereen (a great place in my opinion) so I'm not sure where to go. One week might be in Kenmare.

I like Kinsale in the off-season and mid-week. A couple of places that won't break the bank are Rivermount and Landfall House.

If you want a nice place right in Youghal try Aherne's. Just outside town on the river is a gorgeous B&B Ardsallagh House. So far I have had no luck staying there. Every time I call they are full. But I have inspected it. And if you are in the mood for a big splurge there is Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore.

OK, back from the brink of death (or so I like to dramatize). I've nixed the Kinsale thing and will be staying near Clonakilty in a B&B (Henry's) that sits on a cliff looking out at the Galley Lighthouse so we'll see how that goes. The Bayview sounded fantastic but then along came the option of a spectacular view and i couldn't say know. I'll let you all know what it's like. Seems like a purpose built place and all of the rooms have a crazy view of the sea. Off for more planning now.
