Some friends and I are in the very, very, very early stages of planning a trip to Ireland in April 2013 (we've got to save our money!).
We are wondering if we should try to find a central location to the places we want to see and rent a home for our stay (probably 10 days) or plan to move around the country staying in various b & b's or hotels. It seems the latter is what most people do.
We don't know exactly where we want to go yet, so I know it may be tough to answer, but with travel times, is it feasible to stay in one place and just travel around? I'm pretty sure we'll be renting a car (or van, with the size of our group!)
On a side note.. what does everyone know about County Limerick? That's where my family came from, and I really want to visit!
Thanks so much. I love this site-- very friendly and informative!
There are many 'self-catering' cottages and houses available for rent in Ireland. We have done self-catering many times - it is our preferred way of traveling and, I think becoming more popular. Most places rent by the week. I would suggest you think about renting for a week with a few days of B&B's or hotels to round out the trip.
As far as Co Limerick goes, I have not spent a lot of time there; I'm sure others will chime in with their opinions.
Welcome to my forum. How many people are traveling together? Renting a house can be very cost effective when you have a group. As Stewart said, most places rent from Sat to Sat.
There is no one base in Ireland that will allow for seeing the whole island. You need to define an area and do day trips from your house during that week. Take a look at my Self-catering Page. I also have links to self-catering on my Links Page.
As for Co. Limerick I know enough about it to write a book! Would you care to be more specific? Or perhaps you should browse some Limerick websites:
With 10 days I would consider renting for 5 and Touring for 5. Take a 7 day rental somewhere as a Touring base and use a minimum of 5, Some places rent for 3+ days but charge the same for 4 days as they do for a week. Decide on must see places and then cut them into an achievable bunch.
If you are doing any family links then do the background research before the trip, many people come over and try to do the digging over here wasting days. Limerick is not the biggest of counties but does cover a lot of ground so narrowing the region will help us to help you.

There will probably be 8-9 of us.. so maybe this would be the most economical way to stay. Like I said, nothing is set in stone as to what we want to see, though I would like to spend some time in Limerick (not so much as finding my family roots as just to see it-- maybe just spend some time in a pub!) and another friend has roots in Westmeath. Perhaps if we found something central to those places and branched out from there?
Wonderful links, thanks so much Michele. Some of those homes/cottages look so charming!
Some of the houses are absolutely great. At one of them I wanted to put the stove in my carry-on and take it home with me. In fact the kitchen was larger than my living room. There are some wonderful rentals available. Then there are some that are not so good. Look for 4-star properties.
It's a girlfriend getaway, so the number of bedrooms isn't as important as how many people the place sleeps- hopefully we can find a great place with 4 or 5 beds for a reasonable price. We'd like to be close to a town or village with some amenities and of course a great pub! Can't wait to drink a Guiness in Ireland! We just want to absorb the culture and see some of the highlights that we can get to in our limited time. Any suggestions anyone has would be appreciated! We are all getting together in the November to make our wish list of things to see and do. Obviously, the trip is more than a year away, but were so excited we can't wait to start planning. I plan on getting your book when the new edition comes out next year- I know that will be most helpful!
We stayed in a house in Killarney this summer that sounds like it would fit what you are looking for. Three bedrooms with 5 beds, close to town and lots of great pubs. The listing states 500 Euro for a week in April. Much cheaper that hotel rooms even if you paid for a week and stayed only 5 days. You can take a look at it for yourself on their web site.
