Hi Michele! I hope you're doing well! It's been a long time since I've been on here. Even though I hear often about the topics as my mom is a regular! :)
So, mom and I are planning our third trip to Ireland (either '13 or '15). This time we want to stay in one spot and really live in Ireland for a week. We want to stay in an authenic self cattering thatched roof cottage. We like Peg's cottage and want to see other options too. We love Kenmare, and Kinsale (towns like them).
Can you recommend lovely self catering places near towns like Kenmare and Kinsale?
Ideally we won't be renting a car, so it's important to stay within walking distance to shopping, eating etc. We could stay in any part of Ireland and fly into either airport. :)
All is going well here. Glad to see you are planning another trip to Ireland in a couple of years. Well, you have a tall order. First, thatched cottages are few and far between. I stayed at one in the village of Adare but many are not right in town like that one was.
I assume that you will not be doing any day trips since you won't have a car. Will you just stay put in a town for a week? If you wanted a town with access to day trip tours you might consider Killarney or Galway. But I don't think you will find a thatched cottage actually in one of those towns. I can recommend a townhouse in Kenmare but it is not thatched.
But keep searching. You never know when you will stumble across the right place. You have time to explore your options.
You are correct we will be staying put for a week. I took out your book earlier this morning and saw you wrote about Gate Lodge Cottage and now I'm researching Adare online.
Kenmare is a favorite of our. Please share the townhouse you would recommend and I'll look into it .
Also, is Adare similar to Kenmare, Dingle, or Kinsale? I'm just trying to think of places we've been that we can compare it to.
I hate to shatter a dream but the days of quaint little thatched cottages are distant memories. Little cottages tucked away generally require a car because the donkey has retired and the cart is broken.
Shamrock Cottages and Imagine Ireland both have places available to put you into the country or town but you would need somewhere with a bus service.
The nearest pub to our 200 year old, no longer thatched cottage is 300yards, our nearest village 5 miles and our nearest bus stops on a regular (more than once a week) service are 14 miles and 20 miles. Guess you cant have peace tranquillity and public transport?
No shattered dreams here...I'm well aware of the limited options. The thatched cottage in Adare is turning out to be a great possibility (and one of the few options...)! I'll keep looking... :)

The self-catering townhouses close to Kenmare are Kenmare Rentals. The Foley's who own O'Donnabhain's Pub in town own them and take very good care of them. This is one I have not visited but have had my eye on: Shelbourne Townhouse. It is owned by the people who own The White Room in Kenmare.
I did find you some thatched self-catering cottages near Kenmare at Sheen Falls Lodge - very expensive.
This one is listed near Kenmare but I don't know exactly where it is: O'Sullivan's. You would have to inquire.
Thank you Michele, I'll give those a look even though I'm really pleased with the Village of Adare. The cottage you recommended their is perfect for us, including the price! :)
I enjoyed my week in Adare and Gate Lodge Cottage. Even though Adare is often dissed as being too twee and touristy it is different once the tourists leave for the day. It has good pubs and restaurants and a supermarket all within walking distance of the cottage. If you stay, ask the owner what the code is for the side gate into Adare Manor.
We're really leaning towards that one and I let the owner know I was referred by you. They have availability when we want to go. I'm waiting to hear back from the owner about check in days and check out days and estimate of electricity and heat...
If you do decide on Kenmare instead, I'll add my recommendation to Michele - the Foley's are a great couple, and we truly enjoyed our stay at their B&B in town, O'Donnabhain's. They are a class act. Gerry and Vanessa, is that right, Michele?

Okay...I know this is a stupid questions...AND...I'm not going to Ireland to watch TV...BUT, does Gate Lodge Cottage have a television? It's not a deal breaker...but they do say they have modern day conveniences so I would like to think they have one...(I didn't notice one mentioned on their website.)
Yes, they have a TV in the dining room and in the living room. As I recall you have to use a switch to get more channels. Ask Eamonn about that. They could have a new system in place now.
There are 4 basic TV channels, 3 in English. Soarview replaces analogue signals this year, so 6 or 7 channels. we have a satellite system to our 200yr old cottage so lots of tv channels. But no hot water and an outside toilet. sort of sums up modern priorities??

A work in progress stockmans cottage renovation. Always water boiling on one of the stoves and a great electric shower. Two rooms of the 3 room cottage finished (almost) and the final end room to be extended and converted into a bedroom and bathroom.
Hi, Just a quick update. I reserved the Cottage in Adare for the week of March 16-23, 2013!!! We'll be staying in Galway the week prior to Adare and likely staying at the Park House Hotel. We're so extremely excited! I can't wait for flights to be posted so I can start searching for a great price...Absolutely can't wait and can't believe we'll be in Ireland for both Mom's birthday and ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! Just to say that is cool, even if they don't celebrate it like we do in the USA... :) But I saw somewhere that Adare has a parade...I'm still searching for info on that because I may just join in on the parade...(just kiddin'...I'll behave myself...maybe!) ;)
Not sure about the "celebrate as we do" part, but they do indeed make the day quite interesting. I've been in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day both in Dingle and Dublin area, and it is indeed a party!
I wouldn't take a car anywhere near Limerick for the parade. (done that once, lesson learned) but Adare is on a regular bus link with Limerick and the right side not to get too congested. Pity the Skyfest has moved to Wexford this year.

Your trip is really coming together now. Park House Hotel is an excellent choice in Galway. Since you are staying there for a week they should give you some special offers such as lower price than a per night stay and throw in a couple of dinners too.
