Feedback on first draft of Ireland Trip

We are busily planning our itinerary for our first trip to Ireland and have found so much information on this website.  Thanks, Michele and others!

I am going to post the draft itinerary and invite you to send feedback my way before I make any B&B/Guesthouse reservations.  We have 17 travel days and the plan is to stay 2 nights in each stop and stop at a place in walking distance of the town when possible.

The first question is after flying 18 or so hours (PDX-SFO-Chicago-DUB) and arriving at 8:00 AM in Dublin, iwhat are the pros and cons of staying in Dublin two nights (without a car) or picking up the car and heading to Kilkenney?

Here is the itinerary (2 nights in each stop--with an open third night for one of the stops or?):

Kilkenney

Kinsale or Kenmare (which would you choose for a touring base of the area?)

Dingle

Sligo area (don't have town selected to stay in yet)

Kinvara or Ballyvaugh

Ballinty or Bushmills

Belfast area (will have a car, so likely need to stay on edge of town and not drive in city)

Return car/stay at Dublin airport hotel

Fly home with fond memories of amazing Ireland.

Thanks for any tips in advance!

Nancy

Hi Nancy,

We stayed at the Dunlavin House in Dingle. It was the best breakfast that we had in Ireland. Very clean and a great view of the bay.

A view from the Dunlavin House.

Nancy,

Even if you get a little sleep on the plane you will arrive tired after such long flights. The pro of staying in Dublin is no driving for a couple of days while jet-lagged. However, you might not be able to check-in at a hotel that early. Kilkenny is about a two hour drive from Dublin. That is generally as far as I suggest someone drive the first day with jet-lag. They say that driving with jet-lag is like drinking and driving. Your reflexes are not up to par.

I prefer Kenmare over Kinsale as a base.

I assume the order of your trip would be Dingle to Ballyvaughan; then on to Sligo?

Your itinerary looks doable.

Michele

We stayed at some lovely and hospitable B&Bs while we were there last May. Some of them coincide with your stops. In Kenmare (which is a fantastic town - very worth staying in!) we had the best time at O'Donnabhain's- http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g211860-d212594-Reviews-O_Donnabhain_s_Guesthouse_B_B_Townhouses-Kenmare_County_Kerry.html. They are a gastropub and a B&B, right in the center of town. Clean and modern, great food, great location. Gerry and Vanessa run it, and take care of their guests well.

In Ballyvaughan, we had the Seaview B&B - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g212514-d677410-Reviews-Oceanville_House_Bed_Breakfast-Ballyvaughan_The_Burren_County_Clare.html - great location, nice big, clean rooms. RIGHT next door to Monk's Pub. Fantastic view across Galway Bay.

It will be a long drive from Sligo to Antrim, but doable. We stayed in Cushendall, which has a beautiful coastal walk. The B&B was Riverside - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g209951-d1492232-Reviews-The_Riverside_Bed_and_Breakfast-Cushendall_County_Antrim_Northern_Ireland.html, again, in the center of town, within walking distance of several pubs and B&Bs. Good music at Johnny Joe's.

Michele,

Thanks for the tip on Kenmare.  We're getting closer to deciding to stay in Dublin for the first nights after all the flights and then head out to the country.

More questions to come later!

Nancy

Thanks for the B&B recommendations, I've saved them in my travel folder now.
