Trip to Ireland in October 2012

camo,

Welcome to my forum. One of the very first questions I ask my clients when planning an itinerary is about the "pace" of their trip. Do they want a fast whirlwind tour where they return home tired? Moderately paced where they see as much as possible without exhausting themselves? Or a leisurely tour where they take their time and explore a few places thoroughly. 99% answer: moderate.

There is nothing wrong with your itinerary except the Dublin days being split up. If you want to see Dublin it might be best to have the 2 Dublin days together.

Food: You will find excellent food all over Ireland and in some unexpected places. However, Kinsale in Co. Cork bills itself as "the Gourmet Capital of Ireland". They do have some good restaurants there but I wouldn't necessarily believe the hype.

I suggest you go to the library or bookstore and look at some coffee table photo books of Ireland. That will show you the areas and the various scenery offered. You can also do so by looking at photo websites. Check out a travel guide or two and then make a list of "must sees". All of that will help you pinpoint what you are interested in seeing. Then read my article: Plan Your Trip to Ireland in 10 Easy Steps.

What time of year are you going? When you say "pretty scenery" does that mean postcard scenery - green rolling hills with sheep; beaches and cliffs with crashing surf?

Michele

P.S. I have a lot of photos and articles on my Blog. Maybe it will help with choices?

Hi everyone! I've been browsing these forums and found an absolute wealth of information for a trip that a friend and I are planning for October. We've been talking about it for about 7 years now, and we've finally decided to pull the trigger. I'm very excited!

Upon looking at some self-tour sites, we found a suggested route that appealed to us for two reasons: first, it is in the south, and second, it provides for a "taste" of many different cities over a 10 day tour.

I guess I'm hoping to draw from your experiences, if anyone would be so kind as to chip in. We've planned on 10 days, and have begun planning around the following itinerary:

Dublin - 1 night

Galway - 2 nights

Doolin - 1 night

Killarney - 2 nights

Cork - 2 nights

Kilkenny - 1 night

Dublin - 1 night

Are we being unrealistic to travel so much on a first trip? I feel like we might be. I think my biggest concern is a trip of quantity vs. quality. I guess to some degree, since we're traveling so far, we feel the need to see as much as we can, but I think this may be a mistake. We are more interested in pretty scenery and historic sites, rather than night life. Also, it's probably pretty safe to say that we're foodies. That said, I already suspect we should move the Galway nights into other cities. Which cities (any named above or unmentioned) would you recommend focusing on for scenery, food, and history? Thanks for any help and suggestions!
