Landing in Shannon or Cork?

noAt the end of April, we will travel to Ireland for 5 weeks.  We will have a cottage in Tuosist, Ireland (Beara Penninsula).  Should we fly from Virginia Beach to Shannon or Cork?  My concern is that Shannon is a 3 hour trip by car.  Cork is a 2 hour trip by car.  It is more expensive to fly to Cork, but plane connections will allow us to leave Ireland later in the day at around 11 am.  From Shannon, the leave time is around 9 am.  We would have to leave Tuosist around 3 am to get to Shannon.  Please give us some feedback.  Thanks.  JohnTno

Shannon, save the uk transfer but leave the cottage the night before the return flight and stay near the Airport that night.

Thanks.  I guess that I would have to ask for a one night refund on the cottage.

Tony, I have contracted the cottage for 35 days.  It is a 40th anniversary present to my beautiful wife.  What she doesn't know is that I have secretly arranged to have our vows renewed while we are there.  She won't find out until we walk into the church.  So, I pray that our journey to and from the EMERALD ISLE is as unencumbered as possible.

John,

Is Shannon a direct flight from the US? If you fly into Cork will it mean a connection somewhere that adds time to your flight times? Or are both Shannon and Cork a connection from somewhere else like the UK?

I think that you will find renting a Cottage for 4 days is the same price as renting for 7. Are either the cottage or dates written in stone? Adding a day either side of the rental would give the chance to split the journey both ways so would put Dublin Airport into the mix as an option. Or there are Cottages closer to Shannon.

Michele, flying to Shannon is direct.  Flying to Cork goes thru the UK.  That would add time to the trip.  JohnT

Sorry totally misread your post. With a long rental down outside Kenmare I would definitely consider splitting the airport runs. Apologies again for not reading and registering in the first place.

John,

I have done both - flying direct and connecting in the UK. If I had a choice it would be direct to Shannon, cutting out the UK connection. I do agree that staying near Shannon on your last night (if you depart from there) makes sense.
