Gap of Dunloe

If you are going to drive the gap then do it first thing in the morning before others get up there or you might find it more trouble than its worth.

An article from Irish times

Instead of taking a full day Gap of Dunloe and Lakes tour from Killarney, can we drive to Kate Kearney's and hire a jaunting cart to take us thru the gap and back to Kate kearney's?  Is so, any idea about the cost of a jaunting car?  I hear they are very expensive.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks again.  Bill

Bill,

Yes, you can hire a jaunting car to take you into the gap and back again to Kate Kearney's. How many people will be going? Generally four people go per vehicle at about 20-25 euro per person. That makes the whole vehicle's cost 80-100. If you don't have four people the cost per person will be higher.

Other suggestions: drive the gap yourself.

Michele

Tony,

The links only work in "Advanced Editor" not "Quick Reply" mode.

Gap of Dunloe: Take the N71 toward Kenmare through Moll's Gap. Turn right at the Avoca shop (signposted Sneem). Take your next right to Black Valley. At the crossroads turn right. The road goes through the gap and exits at Kate Kearney's Cottage.

Best done early morning or late afternoon or evening provided there is light.

Another option is to walk the gap. Takes a couple hours but it is lovely if you can do it! We did it in May. Rained a bit on and off, but we were prepared (as you always should be) for that. You can park at Kate Kearney's.

Note: We had one older man say you aren't supposed to drive up there if you aren't a resident. This is evidently NOT a rule, but simply him being a bit contrary - we asked others afterwards :)

How much is the horse drawn trip?  That is something that looks interesting.

The locals are very "protective" of the Gap of Dunloe road. It is a public road so anyone can drive on it. Of course the jarveys have a vested interest in having paying customers. That's why if you try to drive it from Kate Kearney's Cottage they will try to stop you. Better to do it the back way through Black Valley.
