Kilmare

We will be staying in Dunquin, at the end of the Dingle Peninsula, for 2 weeks in April. Could you tell me how far it is to Kilmare, and is it worth driving there for the day? Killarney is closer but sounds less interesting. Thanks for advice. varina

Do you perhaps mean Kenmare?  I have never heard of a village called Kilmare.  If it is Kenmare, it is a wonderful small town and worth seeing.  It is, however, actually father away from Dingle area than Killarney.  The area around Killarney is beautiful -- the town itself not as much IMO.

Let us know if you mean Kenmare.  It is a favorite village for many on this site.

I will assume you mean Kenmare. It's a couple of hours drive, but then anywhere from Dunquin is a couple of hours anyway. To be honest it would depend on what your interests are?

Killarney won Ireland's 2011 National Tidy Towns award. So what's so bad about Killarney?

Hi Judy:

Nothing wrong with it -- heck, I've stayed there and been there several times. I just said in my opinion that I enjoy other places more.  The area around it is just spectacular.  I find the town itself -- while no doubt tidy -- a bit too touristy compared to the smaller villages.  I know many people really like Killarney.

Bert,

I was just pulling you leg. biggrin I love Killarney and will defend it always. Keep telling everyone that Killarney is too touristy so I can have it all to myself.

If you looking to be busy Killarney is a great place. I found killarney to be my favorite town in Ireland. But with that said becareful it can be quite a tourist trap. Still there is alot to see and do and if your careful not to fall into the tourist traps you'll have a great time.

Varina,

Killarney, Kenmare and the whole SW of Ireland is well worth seeing. Since you are staying in Dunquin any day trip you make will take a few hours to accomplish. That is the both the pro and con of staying on a peninsula. I hope you enjoy your time in Dingle.

Be sure to stop by the tourist offices in Dingle, Killarney and Kenmare. They will direct you to some good sightseeing and are generally helpuful.
