Here's a trick - drink at the bar in a pub, not at a table. You'll find yourself included in conversation and part of the craic, rather than left to your own devices. It works pretty much anywhere! When I'm on my own, sitting at the bar, I bring a notebook and jot down my travel notes for the day. INVARIABLY I am asked what I'm writing. Usually I get cheeky and say I'm writing a book about who ever is asking :) That breaks the ice and has led to many fun conversations. And pints.

Dunquin is over the hill from Ventry, so I cannot be definitive, but I don't know of any such group. But as with all rural areas, if they just wandered into the local pub, Krugers (the only one in Dunquin), they would get chatting with somebody I'm sure.

Ballyferriter is probably a better bet. It is a few miles from Dunquin but has three pubs (Tig Ui Chathain/Keane's, Tig Uí Mhurchú/Murphy's and and Tig an tSaorsaigh/Sayers. Murphy's and Keane's are regular haunts for local trad musicians.

There is a nice bar in the Ceann Sibéal Hotel opposite the pubs, where there is always a bit of chat

One other suggestion is that they email the local Comharchumann (I think that's "co-operative" in English) They arrange Irish language classes locally in the summer for adults and for teachers. The manager there, Máire Sheehy, is involved in every local initiative going, and is a font to local knowledge. Her email address is eolas@cfcd.ie
