We are in the early stages of planning our second trip to Ireland in early September. We spent 6 days last October visiting Cong, Doolin, Dingle and Killarney. This year, we plan to spend 10 days in the northern part of the country. The plan is to fly into Dublin and fly out of Shannon. We have a few days planned, but we have a few days that we're looking for some help and ideas on. We are drawn to castles and ancient history, although we loved the Slea Head drive and hope the Coastal Causeway is similar.
Even though we already visited Cong and Doolin, we are considering doing another hawk walk at Ashford Castle or skipping Ashford altogether and doing one in the Burren at the Bird of Prey Center. In Doolin, the weather was not in our favor and we had to skip both the Cliffs and Aran Islands, so my husband would like to try and see them this time around.
Here is what we have figured so far. Suggestions and changes are welcome.
Day 1 & 2: Dublin Day 3: Newgrange and other sights on the drive up to Belfast Day 4: Belfast Day 5: Causeway Coastal Route - Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Dunlace Castle Day 6: Day 7: Day 8: Day 9: possible Hawk walk at Ashford or the Burren, stay in Doolin Day 10: Aran Islands/Burren, stay in Bunratty Day 11: Fly Home
Newgrange will take at least 4 hours. Add a 2 hour drive to Belfast and that will totally fill up your day. You will be pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the Antrim Coast. It rivals Slea Head Drive.
Some other areas to consider:
Co. Donegal Sligo Westport and/or Achill Island
Be sure to visit my Links page for more falconry links.
Thanks for the suggestions Michele. I can see us driving from say Portrush to Donegal and spending 2 days there. Do you think it would make sense then to drive from Donegal to Westport/Achill Island, or should we opt for something shorter before driving down to Doolin?
If you do 2 nights in Donegal then it would be one night elsewhere. If you stayed in Westport, you could do Connemara the next day if you skip the falconry. If the falconry is a must, you could go from Westport to your "hawk walk" and proceed to Doolin.
Keep in mind that the ferries to the Aran Islands do not go from Doolin in bad weather or high seas. Have an alternate plan in place if that happens.
