Achill Island or North toward Donegal?

We are trying to decide which is the better choice for a day trip - Achill Island or north toward Donegal? We'll be heading out from Fuerty, just outside of Roscommon town.

We really enjoy visiting historic sites, an especially castle and abbey ruins.

any thoughts?

Both Donegal town and Achill Sound are about the same distance. Give or take around 100 miles. The area of Co. Donegal is much larger than Achill Island. So perhaps seeing Achill would be more manageable as a day trip.

On the other hand, what about Sligo? It's much closer.

Fairly long Day trip, the Slieve League is about 120 miles from Roscommon (via Sligo 60 miles and Beleek Pottery 80miles) and Achill is about 100 miles (via Westport 70 miles) or 120 miles (via the Céide Fields 80 miles).
