Kilkenny to Kenmare---Interesting route and sights???

Almost April so getting closer to leaving for Ireland!!!! smile Places to visit and to stay are falling into place, thanks to the help of the forum folks and Michele's book.  We've left 4 days open in the middle of the trip to wander about.

Any recommendations for an interesting route between Kilkenny and Kenmare, along with sights along the way to be sure to add to our itinerary?

Thanks,

Nancy

We'll be leaving Kilkenny in the morning and heading to Kenmare for that night's stay.  We'll be at Arthurs Lodgewood in Kenmare for 3 nights, which will give us time to see sights around Kenmare.  I'm looking for suggestions for a great route with sights to take in as we travel from Kilkenny to Kenmare.

Nancy,

Will the route take one day or several?

Nancy,

Will you already have seen the Rock of Cashel? Will you do any of West Cork from Kenmare? What are your interests along the way? Scenic drives? Castles? Gardens? There are just so very many things and routes to recommend I could type all day.

Michele,

Seeing Rock of Cashel along the route to Kenmare makes sense, as we can then spend more time in and around Kilkenny (I printed off the walking tour that you had posted). We enjoy scenic routes (not the main motor ways) and welcome a chance to have a short walk (30 minutes or so) along the route when possible. I'm not sure about when we'd see West Cork, so if you let me know some of the highlights there, we'll be sure to add them to our sights either on the way to Kenmare if we have time or make it a day trip on one of our days there.

Nancy,

Well for something off-the-beaten-path take the N76 south & the R706 north to Fethard. Bet you never heard of that town and it's a nice surprise. Stop for a walk around then proceed to Cashel on R692. From Cashel go south to Cahir for Cahir Castle & Swiss Cottage.

This is where things get interesting. Will you go south on the motorway toward Cork and Blarney and stop at that castle? Or will you take the Vee scenic drive from Cahir to Lismore for a stroll around the gardens? Or will you cut across the middle and stop at Anne's Grove Gardens?

West Cork:

Ilnacullin Gardens

Beara Peninsula

Bantry House & Gardens

Mizen Head

Sheep's Head

Michele,

Thanks for all of the info here. We'll follow this route to Fethard and then Cashel. Then south to Cahir, Lismore, and across to Mallow and either south to Kenmare or west to Killarney and on to Kenmare. Good thing I bought the road atlas you recommended!

Also, thanks for the tips on sights in West Cork.

Nancy
