I've been looking at a map trying to figure out the best route from Kilkenny to the Rock of Cashel. If anyone knows both a scenic route or the major roads, I'll take a look at both.
We have a similar discussion going on about a route from Kilkenny to Cashel to Kenmare. This is what I said:
"Well for something off-the-beaten-path take the N76 south & the R706 north to Fethard. Bet you never heard of that town and it's a nice surprise. Stop for a walk around then proceed to Cashel on R692. From Cashel go south to Cahir for Cahir Castle & Swiss Cottage."
There are two more direct routes. Take the R693 north to Urlingford & the M8 south to Cashel. Or Take the N76 south to Cahir and the M8 north to Cashel.
Is this a day trip? Are you returning to Kilkenny or proceeding on to another place?
Michele, Thanks for your reply. It's just a day trip to the Rock of Cashel. I will write down your suggestions and we will see which route we follow. I don't want to miss seeing the Rock of Cashel as I've heard it's quite impressive.
Your site has been wonderful. We are leaving on our trip in a few weeks and I have gotten so many tips. Thank you!
Since it is a day trip you could make a circle so you are not covering the same roads again.
Do this: "Well for something off-the-beaten-path take the N76 south & the R706 north to Fethard. Bet you never heard of that town and it's a nice surprise. Stop for a walk around then proceed to Cashel on R692. From Cashel go south to Cahir for Cahir Castle & Swiss Cottage."
Then take the N24 east to Carrick-on-Suir. There is a good shopping center (Dove Hill Irish Design Centre) near there and Ormond Castle in Carrick. Take the R697 north to Kilkenny.
