Driving Distances

Thanks Michele

Will probably wait until we get to Ireland and see how we feel about which route to follow then :))

Best wishes
Deb

Hi Michele

I have calculated driving distances (times) for our itinerary in May.  Can you please tell me if my times are correct?  I got the information from various internet websites.

Doolin to Dingle, Via Kilrush crossing the Shannon River on ferry with car (approx 4 hours)

Dingle to Portmagee (approx 2.5 hours)

Portmagee to Kinsale (approx 3.5 hours)

Kinsale to Cashel (approx 4 hours)

Cashel to Kilkenny (approx 2 hours)

Kilkenny to Dublin (approx 3 hours)

Thank you.  Your advice is appreciated as always.

Deb

Deb,

Some of the times seem okay but will depend on routes. For instance Portmagee to Kinsale, are you taking the N22 to Cork and then going south to Kinsale or are you taking the coastal route? The former will take approx 4.5 hours or even more if you get into Cork City traffic.

Kinsale to Cashel direct route 2 - 2.5 hours.

Cashel to Kilkenny an hour or less.

Kilkenny to Dublin 2 hours.

Michele

Thank you for your feedback.
Regarding Port Magee to Kinsale, I printed a map from the www2.aaireland.ie/routes website, which does take the N22 and then the N71.
Would it be quicker to take the coastal route? We are planning to arrive in Kinsale late afternoon and don't wish to tackle peak hour traffic.
If you think the coastal route is quicker and easier, which towns would we be driving through?

Good to hear the other times are a bit shorter than I thought :)

Deb

Deb,

The coastal route will take all day. Although it is a beautiful drive it's slow going and will take much longer than the main route. Of course you would totally avoid Cork City if you did it. Would probably arrive early evening though.

I usually use www.viamichelin.com to calculate distances, and then figure about 30mph for those distances, regardless of how long they say it will take. Because you want to stop - and enjoy - the places along the way. Bathroom breaks, photo breaks, lunch breaks, tractor in the road breaks, sheep in the road breaks - all add to your driving time. The drive from one place to another could take 2 hours or all day, depending on how much exploration you do.
