Itinerary/advice - first trip

Hello,

I'm new here and planning our first trip to Ireland. I just received Michelle's book and am trying to plan our trip. There will be 5 of us, one of them being my 84 year old mother who has always wanted to go to Ireland but has never been. She loves hiking, and hikes every day for at least 2 hours/day. Our current plan is to be in Ireland Aug. 3 - 11.

We are considering going the self-catering route and posssibly having the base in Kenmare. We will only be in Ireland 7-8 days. Couple questions:

1) Would Kenmare be a good base for an entire week, and is there enough to see and do with day trips?

2) Are there good hiking options in that area/nearby? We would like to hike for a couple hours each day if possible.

3) Some of the people in our group would like to see Dublin. One option we are considering is flying into Dublin and arriving in a Fri. morning. Spending the day/night in Dublin. Then, possibly taking a train to the west the next morning, then renting a car from there, and flying out of Shannon. Do you think that would be a good option? I will be the one driving so I think I would prefer to avoid driving in the Dublin area.

Thanks for your help and I welcome any and all suggestions.

Kurt

No problem self catering in Kenmare it's a great base.

As to Dublin those interested can take the train from Killarney and back or if you do fly into Dublin then have at least your 1st night there.

Kurt,

Welcome to my forum. I self cater in Kenmare all the time. It is an excellent base for the SW with no shortage of things to keep you happy and busy for well over a week. There is good hiking in the area, on the Beara Peninsula, near Killarney, Glengarriff, Gougane Barra, etc. There is a tourist office in Kenmare and they will be able to point you to hiking to suit your needs.

Since you are going soon and August is high season it is important to book your self-catering place very soon. There are a couple listed in my book that are excellent. One gives my readers a 10% discount.

As Tony suggested you can catch a train from Dublin to Killarney and pick up a car there. It is a short hop over to Kenmare from Killarney.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Michele
