Jan 2006 in Ireland

Can I start by saying it is so good to find a website like this. I have found it very helpful.

My partner and i are going to Ireland from Jan 1 2006 thru to Jan 8 2006. We are completely overwhelmed by the amount of choices of things to do.

Given we only have a short period, can you suggest some of the must see places. We are both late 20's and would prefer to do a self drive tour rather than a group tour.We start our trip in Dublin and must return to Dublin. We enjoy a mix of history, and sightseeing and don't mind if the 7 days are a little fast paced.

Also, will it be necessary to pre-book accomodation this time of year? Are most castle's etc open during this period.?

I would appreciate anyones thoughts.

I'm glad you found my website. Do take a spin around it for lots more info about Ireland that will be very helpful for your trip. You might take a look at my "Sightseeing" page for my "Top 10 List".

Since you will be in Ireland for only one week at the beginning of January, you might want to consider staying near the east coast rather than trying to see it all (which is impossible anyway). Keep in mind that the days are short and you might get late starts if the roads are frosty or icy. In Ireland seeing less means enjoying it more.

You should pre-book your Dublin accommodations as it is a very busy capital city. For the rest of the time you can get away with winging it.

Not all castles are open in January. In fact, you will have to check opening times at all the places you are interested in seeing.

Take a look at my Top 10 List, then come back and post what your particular interests are and what you are considering doing. Feel free to post any proposed itineraries and I will be happy to give you some suggestions.
