Powerscourt & High road or low road?

Dear Michele,


I'm contemplating our first day upon leaving Dublin in a rental car.  I want very much to visit Glendalough and the monastery of Saint Kevin, and my goal is to reach Dungarvan the same day at a reasonable hour (late afternoon).  We will be leaving Dublin's city centre hopefully around 9:30.


My question is this:  I read in Lonely Planet's Ireland guide about a road called Military Road that leads down to Glendalough and is very scenic.  Will I be delaying our arrival in Dungarvan or rushing our time at Glendalough by using that road rather than the major highway?


The second question is: With all this in mind should we skip Powerscourt altogether or will we have time, do you think, to also get that in?  Is Powerscourt a place worthwhile to just stop by and take a peek, or is it only worthwhile if we are planning to stop and linger?  I imagine that if the second is the case, we should indeed skip it, considering our destination down south.


Any advice appreciated.

It is much easier and quicker to take the main highway down to Laragh and Glendalough. You will spend longer on the military road and it may well be more difficult to find with the new road systems.


Powerscourt is one of Ireland's best gardens. It is possible to spend a couple of hours there exploring, walking the paths and enjoying the various gardens and spectacular scenery. On the other hand, if you skipped the house (partially restored and more of a shopping mall and restaurant now) and headed right for the gardens you might be able to see a good part of it in an hour or so if you don't linger. If you like gardens it would be a pity to be in the vicinity and not see it. Skip the waterfall as the admission price is too high for what you see.


You might let the weather determine if you stop at Powerscourt or not.

I'm gathering that you don't think the scenic quality of the Military Road is much of consideration?


Also, does it seem to you that, even with stopping for an hour or so at Powerscourt and visiting Glendalough as well, we will be able to arrive in Dungarvan at a reasonable time?

The military road is fine. It is a bit bleak and barren and goes through the heathery, rocky mountains. I think you will probably see better scenery on your trip. If it is of great interest to you then take the time to see it. Your drive time from Dublin to Dungarvan will probably be (depending on your route) about 3 1/2 hours. You can use that as a guideline for planning on what to see along the way.
