Cork in November

Hi Michele and members.  I am taking my 17 yr old daughter to Ireland in November.  The last two years I stayed in Galway and took day trips from there.  This year I want to use Cork as my base and take day trips from there.  I should mention that I have no interest in driving while there so I will need to rely on public transportation/tour companies.  While in Galway, I had great luck with Lally Tours for my day trips so I am hoping to find a tour company based in Cork.  Any suggestions?  Also, I will be staying at Fernroyd House B&B.  Trip advisor says great things.

Rachael,

Tour companies usually scale back or stop operating in the off season. I just had a look at a couple of companies and they stop in September. If you go to my Transport page I have a link to public transportation. Your best bet may be taking trains and buses around or hiring a taxi for a partial day. Looks like the Hop On Hop Off bus is not operating in November.

The Cork Guide  might be helpful.

Do you have any ideas of where you want to go or what you want to see?

Michele

Cork is not as Tourist geared as some places off season. Where is it you want to take tours of? Kinsale and Cobh are accessable by Public transport as is Blarney. Cashel and Cahir are on the Cork Dublin bus route. There will be a limited bus service to some of west Cork with Bus Eireann. If you want to take a tour from Killarney there are trains from Cork to get you there before the 10am departures.

Thank you Michele and Tony for the info! I thought that Cork would be a good base, but maybe not? I just want to see every inch of Ireland :) I love Inis Mor, Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty. Anything like that would appeal to my daughter, I'm sure. If you think there is a better place to make my base, I am open. I can always cancel my B&B reservation without a problem.

You will be fine with Cork. Galway is geared for the tourist trade in a big way so its a bit unfair to compare the town (Sorry City) with anywhere except perhaps Killarney.

There is a good bus network and decent rail links

Paddywagon run tours from Cork in November but you might be better getting to Killarney for the ring of Kerry and Dingle Tours. I would try and get onto the Beara Peninsular if possible.

Killarney has more of a tourist infrastructure. There are many tours that run year round from there such as Dingle, Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe. Plus you can spend a day or two just seeing the area around Killarney. Beara is not well served by public transportation. You would most likely need to hire a taxi or driver for a tour there.

I use the Eviston Hotel in the centre of Killarney, upgraded room for comfort without the stupid prices charged by some Killarney Hotels. Or Sunnybank B&B

It sounds like I might be better off making Killarney my base. My cousin has been there and had great things to say. I just thought that Cork might be a bigger and tourist friendlier base. So if I do make Killarney my base, any recommendations on B&Bs? I would need to be close to the city centre.

Tony, I think your 2 links somehow got hooked together?!?  The hotel comes up but not the b&b.
