My family (me, DH, and two boys 18 and 13) are hoping to visit Ireland during summer 2013. We would like to rent a cottage and car for 3 weeks and take days trips to see as much of Ireland as possible. Any suggestions as to where to base our stay, sites to see and car rental dos and don'ts would be greatly appreciated. We live in SW Florida. Anyone ever fly out of Fort Myers to Ireland? Thanks so much for any help. Can't wait to go to the emerald isle!
Firstly I would suggest that you select probably 2 touring bases for Self catering which generally runs Saturday to Saturday. Use the other week for a little touring. (the cost of 2 rooms in a basic but good B&B would possibly work out not much different to a week self catering in high season (depending what you call summer?)
Do you have any must see, must do's?
Car hire will not be cheap and needs some consideration but at this stage deciding a rough itinerary might be the first step.

Like Tony said, most self catering will require a minimum stay of one week, running Saturday to Saturday, so you should plan your trip accordingly. Last year our family of four stayed at self catering, one week in Killarney to tour the southwest and one week in the Galway area to tour the west. Those two areas, in my opition, have the most to offer for day trips from a base location.
Read the topic about car rental at the top of this forum. We have always rented from Dan Dooley car rental without any problems.
We fly to Ireland from the mid-west and because we want to arrive at Shannon airport we need to connect on the east coast since there are no longer direct flights from Chicago to Shannon. I assume you will also need to connect on the east coast, NY, Newark or Boston if you want to arrive at Shannon. However, Aer Lingus does have flights from Orlando to Dublin.
Once you decide on a location, you will get many suggestions on where to base your stay. Planning is half the fun.
Welcome to my forum. First take a look at the Self-catering page of my website. Then look at Car Rentals. As Judy mentioned there is a lengthy section on the forum (a sticky) about renting cars. I've flown Miami to Ireland but it has been ages ago.
It would depend upon your interests, but a Good, GENERAL Rule of Thumb would be what Tony suggested. You should put together a 'Wish List' of sites and then group them by area -- Many times, THAT will pretty well determine WHERE you decide to hang your hat!
This October, we are Self-Catering in Inniscrone (or, Enniscrone) Co. Sligo for five nights and Mourneabbey (just South of Mallow), Co. Cork, for a full week.
We live in North Central Florida -- Gainesville -- and usually fly from either here, Jacksonville, or Orlando. In April of 2003, we flew Continental, out of Sarasota and returned, into Fort Meyers. In June of 2004, four of us flew In/Out of Fort Meyers, on Spirit. We flew into Shannon -- via Boston, but Returned from Dublin, via JFJ in New York.
