The usual - Itinerary trouble!

My thoughts are in green ...

Hello,

My husband, brother and I are going to be in Ireland for 1 week in late February. My brother and I are celebrating our 30th birthday (twins) and are excited to see our ancestrial homeland.

We fly into Dublin, arriving at 8 am on Saturday. We leave from Shannon at 9 am the following Saturday. We are doing two nights in Dublin, as we have cousins studying abroad meeting up with us -we plan to do the Guiness factory, the James Joyce pub crawl, St. Stephens, St. Patricks etc. Monday morning we pick up the car, and are heading out to Glendalough. Sounds fine and fun.

My first problem is this: Night 2 - Glendalough to Kilkenney to Killarney for the night - is this too long of a drive? We want to be free to stop as we want, take pictures, explore, stop for a drink or lunch in Kilkenny, see the castle and keep going.  I would just go to Kilkenny if you are wanting to see castles, have lunch, photos, drinks, explore ... just stay there. It gets dark early that time of year.

Then - night 3 depends on what happens on night two. Night four is up in the air too. But, we also want to go to Dingle and Doolin, but does it make more sense to stay in Killarney a second night and drive to Dingle on the way to Doolin, and stay in Dingle for the night there. Go to Killarney and stay there nights 3-4. You could use a two-night stay somewhere by now.  You can do Dingle as a day trip, or head south from there and see parts of the Ring.

The latter part of my itinerary is easier.

Night five and six - stay in Galway, explore the city, see Burren/Connemara, etc, fly out on Saturday morning. All  help is appreciated! Stop at Cliffs on your way to Galway from Killarney.  Take the Tarbert Ferry to save time.  No need to do Doolin on this trip.  Two night stay again in Galway -- easy day trip to Kylemore Abbey and Burren. One possible change to consider: If you have an early flight, I would stay nearer to SNN that sixth night.

The only things we are dead set on seeing are Kylemore Abbey(parents got engaged there), Glendalough, the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. We are okay with skipping Blarney, Waterford. A stop at Cashel would not be difficult starting out that morning when you leave Kilkenny. Would not think twice about skipping Blarney and Waterford. We are on the fence about the Ring of Kerry. The other big items- Rock of Cashel, etc. are ok if we have time, but we know we cant see it all.

thank you!

Perhaps that gives you more to consider!

Best regards,

Geno

Megan,

Welcome to my forum. Like many other people you have a long "must see" list but not enough time. Have you thought of three nights in Dublin and doing a day tour to Glendalough on one of the days? Then you could get your car on Tuesday and drive directly to Galway for a few nights. Since your flight is at 9 am, you need to be at Shannon Airport at 6 am. Might be a good idea to spend Friday night very close to the airport. Bunratty is ideal for that.

If you did that you wouldn't see the SW. But you wouldn't be spending all your time in the car either. It all depends on how you would like the pace of your trip to be.
